James Hare Obituary

Hare, James Willis, M.D. Dr. James Willis Hare, age 63, of Mequon, Wisconsin, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, August 10, 2009, while on vacation at his beloved family summer home in East Orleans on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Visitation will be Sunday, August 16 at CROSSROADS PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 6031 W. Chapel Hill Rd., corner N. Green Bay Rd., in Mequon, from 4:00 to 5:45 PM, with the Memorial Service beginning at 6:00 PM. Jim was born March 16, 1946 to Willis and Lucille Hare in Middletown, New York. He graduated in 1964 from Middletown High School, where he was a National Merit Scholar. After graduating from Colgate University in 1968, he was drafted into the United States Army. Although strenuously opposed to war on moral grounds, Jim nonetheless felt obligated to serve his country when called upon. He was granted official government status as a Non-Combatant Conscientious Objector and served nine months under fire in Vietnam as Medic with an infantry company. Upon discharge from the Army, he enrolled at Columbia University's Graduate School of Engineering, where he met Karla Pinson. They married on August 21, 1971. Jim received his masters' degree in Biomedical Engineering from Columbia in 1972. In 1976, he received his Doctor of Medicine degree from Cornell University Medical College. Jim and Karla moved to Milwaukee in 1976, where he participated in the Family Practice Residency training program at St. Michael Hospital. He was Chief Resident in the program during his third and final year of training. From 1976 to 1988, Jim was in private Family Practice in Mequon. In 1988 he joined the Family Health Plan Cooperative where he became Clinic Director and served on the organization's board. After receiving further training through the American Academy of Physician Executives, he continued his medical career as a Medical Director for several nationwide health insurers. His most recent occupation was Clinic Director and physician at the Milwaukee clinic of Concentra Occupational Health. Jim's personal interests included extensive involvement with Mequon's Weyenberg Public Library Board, preceding and including the library's addition and expansion. As a former Eagle Scout, Jim also was also deeply involved in local Boy Scout Troup 865 where he served several years as Scoutmaster. He enjoyed nothing more than being with his sons and their friends on camping trips and expeditions. Jim was an active member of Crossroads Presbyterian Church since 1981. His fondest church memory was a medical mission trip to Honduras in 1995, where he treated thousands of poor people with significant medical needs. He is predeceased by his father, Willis Hare (1907-1981) and mother, Lucille Hare (1920-2000). He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Karla Hare, and their children, all of whom reside in New York City: Jordan Hare and his fiancée Helen O'Reilly, Nathaniel Hare and his girlfriend Emily Fisher, and Lauren Hare and her girlfriend Jess Lopez. He is also survived by his sister Pamela Hare and her husband Albert Schoemann, of East Orleans, MA; sister Jane Clark of Kennebunk, ME; and brother Jonathon Hare of Fort Atkinson, WI. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes donations to be made to Crossroads Presbyterian Church, where a memorial fund will be established to provide scholarship money for future participants in medical missions. Additional contributions may be made to the Weyenberg Public Library Foundation in Mequon. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to everyone that has helped them in this time of need and have set up a website for people to share stories, photos, and memories, www.jamesharememorial.com. I never "met" Dr.Hare in person, but I talked with him almost daily from the St.Louis office, of United Health Care. It was my sincere privilege to work with him. I found him to be very friendly, always making some sort of joke. I love a person with a great sense of humor. We did laugh a lot. I respected his knowlege and ability to handle "the crisis of the moment".
I am so sorry for your loss, you will all remain in my prayers. It is difficult to imagine this world without him.
God bless all of you, and I know that Dr.Hare is held in God's loving arms.
Sincerely yours,
Pam Moynihan, RN

Your father and husband was a remarkable man. He was so patient centered. He loved to teach and try to make a differance in his patient's medical conditions. His compassion for everyone was extraordinary. He was so proud of his children. He loved to share stories about them. He loved to point out his son's photography. He loved his wife and spoke of it often. He loved his home esp. his backyard in Wisconsin but he really loved his "cottage" in Cape Cod. He would say no matter where his children were this place was a gathering place for them to get together. My favorite memory of him is his photo of the ship that run aground. He stated that it always gave him perspective and helped him form the decisions that he had to make. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I was so saddened to hear about Jim. I was a classmate, from Middletown High School Class of '64, and remember him with great respect. The last time I saw Jim was our 10th High School class reunion, at which time Barbara and I were pleased to meet Karla. Our prayers and thoughts are with you.

Dear Karla and family,
It is with a heavy heart that I am writing this to you. Since I heard the news of Jim's passing, I have been able to think of little else. I hope that you will be sustained by the people who will support you in the next days, weeks, and months. We are here for you to talk, to cry, to remember.
Take care and be good to yourselves.

Tom and I feel so blessed to have been a part of Karla and Jim's lives these last few years. It was great to visit Cape Cod with Jim and see his relaxed, playful side emerge at his favorite place - "the cottage." He was a scholar, a gentleman, a loving father, a devoted husband, and a dear friend. Who would have thought our last, best memory of this dignified Eagle Scout would be of blowing bubbles together in his front yard in East Orleans! We will miss him.

Dr. Hare was an excellent Dr. He often went the extra mile for patients. He was never in a rush. He was my family Dr. and my family was blessed to be in his care. Even though My family had not seen him in years, I will never forget the extensive time he took to provide us with quality health care. My deepest condolences to his family and close friends.
