Please accept my deepest condolences on the passing of John
Schmitz. I met John during the mid 70's while the Athletic Trainer at UW-Milwaukee. He is one of the ATC's who did his job very well and in doing so promoted the profession of Athletic Training and its value in the high school setting. His long hours and dedication are recognized and respected by all ATC's & LAT's.

Schmitty was a great teacher, friend, and person. He was always there for you when you needed someone to confide in. I will never forget his advice! His great personality made his classes very eventful. He was one of the best! He did make a difference in many of his students lives.

Kristy, after reading what others have said about John it is clear what an outstanding and special man you shared your life with. I truly regret not having known him. I am so very sorry for the loss of your 'best' friend and companion. Heartfelt condolences to you, John's children and extended family and to all whose lives he touched.

Growing up with John was always fun and dangerous. We did a lot of goofy things that should have gotten us into more trouble than we did. At the funeral, I was impressed at all the people John's life had touched. God must call the best home first. I'm proud to have called him my friend.

I knew john since grade school at Holy Cross. We did some stuff that the nuns wouldn't be proud of, but we sure enjoyed it. John's smile always proved that. I was in touch with John via email over the years and was just about to send an email to him asking if he was still alive. I didn't have time to send it... I wish I did now. He was a great man and a better friend. He will be truely missed by everyone who knew him.

To John's family--I have one question: Did he leave me the Corvette?? (Only kidding). John and I first met in grade school. We used to hang out and go for Caradaro pizzas and to see Clint Eastwood spaghetti westerns.
I was surprised and saddened to hear of John's passing, and my deepest sympathies to his children and loved ones. I will put him in my prayers.

I was saddened to hear of Schmitty's passing. Personally, I had him as a trainer, and buddy to talk to in my 10 Years at Pius, 4 as a student where he was always fixing us, and six as a co-worker who would always add a little levity to the situation. For my father, a buddy, and co-worker.
Jessica, I am sorry for you loss, I remember distinctly seeing the love and friendship you shared with your father, even when he was driving you nuts, or vice-versa.
The world has once again lost not only a good man, but a caring man.

I am so saddened to hear about Mr. Schmitz. He was such a great guy!
I met Mr. Schmitz in the early 1970's, when he became our new homeroom teacher, at Juneau High School. He was only ten years older than us and we liked him immediately. He was cool and funny, and he knew just the right way to interact with teenagers.
He came into my life the year after my dad died, and he soon filled a deep void in my life. He was part dad, part big brother, and part friend. He was such an important part of my life in high school, and he left a lasting impression on my life to this day, over 38+ years later.
Much more than homeroom teacher and student, we soon became really good buddies. We'd meet almost every day in his office, eat "m & ms", and have long talks about life. He'd listen to all my shy, goofy, teenage girl problems, and all of my hopes and dreams for the future.
When he was the JV basketball coach and I was a cheerleader, he'd give me (and some of the players) a ride to the game, when we had no other way to get there. He'd go out of his way to pick us up at our homes, so we didn't have to ride the city bus at night. (Of course, that meant we got to ride in his cool old car! How I loved that car! It was straight out of American Graffiti.)
He was always there for me. What an amazing teacher and person.
I have been a teacher for 31 years, and I have always tried to be the kind of teacher Mr. Schmitz was, both in and out of the classroom. Someone he'd be proud of. He truly cared about people and he showed it every day of his life. Underneath his sometimes grumpy exterior, there lived a big, ol' teddy bear. The world was lucky to have him in it. I know I am a better person because of him.
Good-bye dear, Mr. Schmitz! I will never forget you!

Im from the class of 91' ,we all had a tight bond and appreciation for each other ,John told us seniors on the the football team that we were a special. A group that gets it .John made us special, taught us to care for and look out for each other. He showed us how hard work and determination can bring people together. I learned life lessons from him that I use every day. He was a great teacher that way and a even better friend . I am a better person because of him. He arranged my first job as a freshman and 19 years later I'm still here at Barbiere's Italian Inn about to open a second location in South Milwaukee. He really made me who I am today. ps Ms. Frank if I made any typo's its my spell check's fault....eclpise (matt willers)

Schmitty was my good friend growing up. We always were doing crazy, funny things together. We once served A Saturday mass at Holy Cross church. We took a bag of unleaven communion hosts and ate them in his garage. Another time, I was in the hospital and Schmitty came in with Graf's soda cans that were canned with beer in them the night before on his shift there. Always remembering the crazy stuff. Take care Schmitty...your friend,Dick

Our Deepest Sympathies in memory of Schmitty.
Our daughter Gabie has had the honor of working under the wings of Schmitty at Pius XI High School as a Sports Medicine Trainer. She has been working with him since the beginning of freshman year, she is a sophmore now. She has learned so much from Schmitty, which she will take into her future. He has given her a great start to a great future....he truly was a great person, he was admired and looked up to by so many kids, he has left an impression that will forever live on.
Again, thank you Schmitty for all you have done, giving Gabie the opportunity to work for you has given her the chance to learn, make tons of friends and memories to last a life time, as you will in all of the lives that you have touched......
God Bless

Ms. Frank, Jessica, and David;
Words cannot express the grief that I felt when I learned about Schmitty's death. Please know that Schmitty, his depth of love and his legacy is not gone but will live on forever. Schmitty was an amazing man and he still is. I know that personally, I am forever thankful that he was in my life.
One of the things that I recall vividly is that fact that Schmitty looked at all of us students and he saw something in us. He believed in our capabilities, he believed that all us misfits had qualities that were worth nourshing and developing. Personally, I know that if had not been for the guidance of Schmitty at some points, I truly don't know how I would have made it through some of the hardes times of my life.
As we grieve, I also hope we rejoice. Rejoice in the fact that God gave us a great friend, mentor, and father figure even though the time seems so short.
Ms. Frank-Jessica-David---take heart..the legacy lives on!
With love and sympathy-

To know Schmitty was to admire him. His heart and soul were bigger than this world, and he shared a piece of himself with every life he touched.
Schmitty was never too busy to share a bit of wisdom, or his honest opinion. He treated us as equals when we were children, and taught us how to find the raw humor of any situation.
To this day I cannot put a pair of shoes on a table because Schmitz told me it was bad luck.
We will all selfishly miss one of the most selfless people to walk this Earth. His legacy lives on through us all. My heart goes out to his close relatives and friends. May you find peace in his memories and knowing so many loved him.

Words can't express how much Schmitty will be missed. He did so much for me my senior year in high school, that I couldn't do enough show my gratitude. He arranged for me to intern at Froedert Hospital in the occupational therapy department, where I recieved a stipend to pay for books my first year of college. He also knew that I needed a full time job, so he pulled some strings and he got me a job at Joseph's Hospital. He also played a role in helping recieve student of the year award and the Coca Cola scholarship. Because of him, I graduated with a B.S. degree in Occupational Therapy and a Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. I am currently teaching special needs children in MPS. Without your encouragement and help, I don't know if I could have made it. Thank you, Schmitty for giving me a great educational start. You will be greatly missed.

Schmitty is one of the biggest reasons I am an athletic trainer today. His mentoring has left a lasting impression on me and I am forever grateful. He always had a "tip for the day" for us as we assisted with football practices. I have so many fond memories of working with him and most of all all of the opportunities to celebrate with him. He had a great sense of humor and always made it a good day! He was a great and caring athletic trainer, but most of all a genuinely kind person. He will certainly be missed.

My son played baseball for Schmitty (Josh Truss, class of 2000) and to this day Josh's face lights up when Schmitty's name is mentioned. What has been said over and over is SO true; he touched hearts & lifes everywhere he went. But, he not only touched his students and athletes, but also their families. I can't thank him enough for the love and respect that he showed my son and his friends. Schmitty was a life coach even more than a baseball coach. Peace and blessings to his family - including the enormous extended family that has lost one unique man.

I am so sad to hear of Mr. Schmitty's passing. He was such a great teacher. At least one thing that made Schmitty so great was that he found passion and pride in what he did, unlike many teachers these days. This love and passion shined through, not only in his lessons, but also in his students and their abilities. Learning from Schmitty was exciting and interesting—the way learning should be. You will be truely missed.

To Mr. Schmitz & family:
You were both a teacher and a mentor. As a teacher you didn't give up when others would have. As a mentor you taught me never to give up when most would have. Your life touched me and is a testament to your love and carrying for others and not just yourself. If more educators understood the "Smitty" model of personal and professional understanding of their students the world would be a much better place. You will be missed - Peace

He would line us up against a wall and hit the ball at us as hard as he could.......with a grin on his face.
Mr. Schmitz was also a master of the hidden ball trick which we were able to successfully employ on numerous City Conference rivals.
He was an incredible person, role model, and mentor. I had lunch with him recently and he told me his viewpoints on current events and also had several new stories. I don't think I got two words in the whole time.
He had no complaints that day and was, as always, a happy and extremely interesting person. In other words, he hadn't changed since I met him 29 years ago.
Thank you for everything you taught me (us), rest in peace Coach.

Jessica, David and Ms. Frank-
My heart sank to hear the news of Schmitty's passing. Not only to me, but to countless numbers of Juneau's students he was a role model, a coach, a teacher and a father figure. No matter how busy he was he always took a minute to listen to every situation, story, "emergency", and issue....and then he solved each and every one. 100 times a day, picking someone up, dusting them off, letting them know they could do it again...and move forward...somehow leaving someone better off than he found them.
For me, the world today is without one of its greatest, larger than life heroes. In my opinion, his legacy will be that he spent his lifes work pouring his heart into, caring for, molding, and shaping young people. So many are so blessed because of his efforts.
Peace and blessings be with you all mourning his loss.

I first met Coach Schmitz in September 1973 as my 8th grade science teacher. He quickly became my 'father' at school. His concern for my personal well-being, both as my basketball coach and as my mentor was/is something I have carried with me to this day. As a high schooler, he took such great concern for me ! He modeled a teacher-student relationship. We continued our relationship through the past 35-plus years; lunches, dinners or coffee. He taught me "underdogs have to work harder despite the circumstances." I often tell people that I had a great teacher during my formative years in Coach Schmitz for he provided me opportunities that I wouldn't have been able to afford otherwise. He would pick me up and take me to basketball camps, basketball games, or just 'hang out.' When I had surgery a few years back, (2007) he visited me and gave me his 'special balm' during my healing time. He truly showed this 'kid' what it meant to go above and beyond his chosen profession and showed love for me that I carry to this day. At a lunch just a few months ago, I told Coach Schmitz that he was an integral part of the man I am today. (An emoitonal time together!) My deepest sympathies to the family and friends of COACH Schmitz. May his memory be eternal.

Mr. Schmitz,
Never having a father figure in my life, you filled that void. You never asked to do it, your kind soul just did it. For that, I am so ever honored to have had the blessing of you in my lifetime.
I can't thank you enough for always being there, taking an interest in my life and being a mentor to me on the field and off. As you graciously did for so many.
Every baseball stitched bruise from your practice ground balls I wore like a medal, a badge of courage. I know you'd say then, or are even thinking right now, "It hurt you more than me..." and you'd chuckle and get a laugh out of it.
You meant so much to me and touched so many lives with your spirit, infectious laugh and genuine personality.
You transcended teaching with your own personal style. For that, we all adored you and learned so much more valuable lessons about life.
I can't begin to possibly thank you for your guidance. You gave me the chops and courage in life, beyond what anyone can teach in a daily classroom setting. You motivated and inspired many...
You took pride in all your students and enjoyed basking in their accomplishments after High School and it was always a joy to speak with you and share those special moments with you.
Outside of that tough exterior, you were a gentle, humble and compassionately kind man.
You have left us with such a wonderful, joyous legacy.
You were the face of Juneau High School. I will always cherish you my terrific teacher, greatest coach, dear friend and loving father figure.
All my love to you and your family...
You are missed so much already by us all.

I am so sorry to hear about John's passing as it is a major loss in all our lives. We are forever defined by the traits we inherited from people God sends to walk in our individual paths, and I thank Him for sending John to walk in mine.
As I was getting ready to step on the court lastnight to officiate a basketball game, I was told John had passed away. I was immediately taken back to the many times John came in to talk to the officials in our association regarding how we could take better care of ourselves before and during the season. Many of the things John taught me I still use today.
But it's not just the things John taught me that I will remember him for, it's the things he showed me. How whenever I saw him in a gym or on the field, he always had a hand extended to shake and a smile on his face. How he taught me there was so much more to athletics - to a game - then tape and braces.
I'm going to miss John.
I wish you peace knowing he is in the Lord's hands.
With sympathies and condolences,
Pat

I am the current sports medicine fellow at the MCOW, and we work with Pius High School athletics, a big part of which is the training room. Like the many fellows before me, Schmitty has touched my life in a very profound way. I am deeply saddened to hear of his passing. I am currently working in Vermont for a month, and thus unable to return for services. Schmitty was always there for a laugh, and was always willing to "share his wisdom" regarding treatment of athletes. He loved the kids he took care of, they meant the world to him. He was a teacher and a friend. The measure of a man is the lives he touched, and Schmitty continues to mean so much to so many people. I will miss him dearly, but his autographed San Diego Chargers trading card will hold a special place in my office as long as I practice. On behalf of all of the physicians that Schmitty helped train, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and the thousands of lives touched by this special man.

Two key words come to mind when thinking about such a wonderful man: Mentor and Motivator. His impeccable ability to take kids of different cultures, talents, and situations and be able to mold them into a "team" is what will stand out most to me. There was no "team" concept however. Instead, he taught many to think of it as a "family" concept. He would give all he had to touch the life of every person he came in contact with. You will be greatly missed by many people for many different reasons. You are most definitely in a perfect place.

I'd like to give my sympathies to his family and to all who are in grief for him right now. I just want to say that he was, is, and will always be one of the greatest influences in my life. I would not be where I am or who I am today if I never met him. I am honored to have been a student of his. He taught me so much and kept me out of so much trouble. I took his sports medicine class to get out of taking gym and I wasnt really sure what I was getting myself into but I wouldnt change it for the world. I learned more in his class than any other class in school and more than just about sports medicine but about life, goals, never giving up and more. He encouraged us all and never judged any of his students. I graduated a year early thanks to him even though he wasnt ready for me to leave yet. We held the line up at the podium on graduation day. But that wasnt the last time I saw him. He came to my wedding in June 2008 (even through our little hurricane) in his same spirits of joy and happiness and as healthy as a horse! He looked great! I am shocked to finally know his age! He used to tell the class he would give anyone an "A" for the semester if we could guess how old he was. I dont think anyone ever did! LOL! He was a wonderful man, my hero and a legend. Schmitty you will be greatly missed, gone but not forgotten, and forever loved!

Schmitty was my "Assistant Athletic Trainer" (as he liked to call himself) at Pius XI High School for the past 4 years, even though he was "older and wiser" than me. He taught me so many things about life and the athletic training profession. He has dramatically impacted my life and he will always hold a special place in my heart. I am already really missing my "Assistant". To his family, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

As a coach, Schmitty found our talents, taught us how to improve them and made us lettermen. As a mentor, Schmitty found our soles, taught us how to improve them and made us better men.
Schmitty was my football and baseball coach. I had little natural athletic talent. As my coach, Schmitty found that, despite my lackluster skills at quarterback, I could snap a football a country mile and always hit my target no matter the weather. At 5'11" and 145 pounds soaking wet, putting me in the center of the line took guts, his and mine. His answer was to put a "beefalo" on either side of me. Anything short of that and I would probably have been flattened. I never got hurt, despite what seemed like half the defense being lined-up at nose-tackle, and missed only one snap.
Schmitty's lesson was that, in life, it is safer to surround yourself with the right people as your talent will shine. Anything short of that and you will probably get hurt.
God bless you Schmitty!

"Mr. Schmitz", "Coach Schmitz" and "Schmitty the friend" made me proud to say that I graduated from Solomon Juneau High School. He taught lessons in the classroom, on the field and lessons that I have carried along with me through life. It was a pleasure for me to introduce you to my family a couple of months ago when my daughter was taking a tour of Pius. For you Schmitty one last time, "Good Morning Juneau".

Schmitty,
I grew up (literally) with you at Juneau. I met you at 11 and graduated with you at 17. I kept score for you at sporting events, ran illegal contraban during school hours(chocolate bars/other sweets) took pictures for you and even babysat for your kids way back in the day. You came to our reunions and will always be one of the most beloved teachers I've ever had. I'm proud to have called you friend throughout the years. Your children can feel proud to have you as their dad. May our lord give them the strength to get through this difficult time until they are with you again.
With love, prayer and many thanks for all you have done.

There is not enough room here for what Schmitty meant to me and my family. He was more than a teacher and a coach. He was friend and even more, like a father. I will miss our weekly conversations we had. My deepest sympathy to Jessie, David, and Mrs. Frank. Love you all!

My sympathy goes out to all that share in the loss of Schmitty. He was more than a teacher or a coach, to many he was more of a hero. Many looked up to him with the greatest of respect and he will be greatly missed. He may have only saw himself as just a man, but to some of us thats lives were touched by him, he will always be seen as a legend in his own time. May the sorrow that is felt in the hearts of many at this time of his passing, find some kind of comfort because we were so blessed to have known him.
