Dear John, Debbie and the Balestrieri family. I was shocked to hear this news. Joe was a great wit, exceptional raconteur, erudite scholar and a fun man to be around. I will not forget sipping cocktails, listening to opera and hearing him recite from his extensive collection of memorized quotes. Our thoughts are with you from Australia.

I remember standing at the bar at Snug's, cracking jokes with him, and I remember my father telling me what a good attorney Joe was, and how he was especially impressed with Joe's extensive vocabulary. I knew Joey when he was in law school at UW/Madison. To this day, if I smell English Leather aftershave, it brings back fond memories of him. My condolences to the family.

Dear Catherine, I'm not sure why I happened to look at this section online today, I don't normally. I was shocked to see Joe's name. It has been over 30 years since I left Milwaukee, the newspaper and working with you at the Club.
I am so sorry for your family's loss. Joe was such a special person. He could make you laugh 'til you were in tears with such an intelligent wit, and was always the gentleman. He will leave a hole in many lives, I'm sure.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Balistrieri family today.
Although I never had the good fortune of knowing Joe well, I did meet him once about 20 years ago. A meeting I never forgot. He emanated life and spirit. I immediately knew this was a very special man. His passing, indeed, marks the end of an era and it saddens me.

John, Debbie and all of the Balistrieri family. I have always cherished the time that Dick and I had spent with your family. I recall and hold so dearly the times that, Joe, through his charm, wit and heart managed to make me smile when a tear would appear on my cheek after Dick's passing. I only wish that I could now reciprocate by being there for all of you. Men like Joe are few and far between...he will be missed. God Bless you all.

Life sometimes gives us brief moments with people.....like those years in the early 80's when Joe was, not only my employer but, someone I turned to as a friend. To me Joe was a pulchritudinous man who displayed such eloquence, intelligence and wisdom. Yet he was never dry, never lacking witty words and phrases that made everyone laugh. Many of his jokes and phrases still resonate in my mind today.
In those brief moments, over those fun years at Snugs, Joe had an impact on me that will last a life time. May he rest in eternal peace.

Joe and the Balistrieri family were great and cherished friends of my father, Ricardo, who passed away in August. They are together again (though too soon), listening to Caruso sing, watching the late, great ponies run again. God bless our departed, as well as all of us who remain.
