Dear Mrs. Barboriak and Family,
I was so saddened to hear of Dr. Barboriak's death when I got back into town this weekend.
We go back to the 70's when I began my career in research at the VA. He was brilliant, kind and an excellent teacher and friend to many. He was a model for young scientists to follow.
He used to visit my office at least once a week long after he retired. Now that I am working at MCW, he would still stop by my office here just to say hello and see how things were going.
He truly exemplified the "greatest generation" and the researchers he so exquisitely trained as well as the lives of all he touched will live on as his legacy. The world has lost a real gentleman and I am pleased and proud to have known him.
My sympathy and prayers are with you all.

Dear Gertrude,
I'm sorry to hear of Joe's death. I didn't find out until today or I would have stopped for the service. Joe was a major mentor for me as I started my career at the Medical College in 1978. I greatly appreciated his insight and his ability to guide. I also appreciated the chance to work with his sons as they were developing their research careers.
My condolences.

Mrs Barboriak and family,
Dr Barboriak will be missed. He was a gentleman in every sense of the word. I appreciated all his support throughout my career. I joined the MCW faculty and VA staff in 1980. Dr Barboriak was a constant inspiration through his scholarship and inquisitiveness. I thought the words by his son at the funeral were perfect and captured the man completely. We will all miss him and we continue to benefit from his contributions.

Mrs. Barboriak, I am sad to hear about Dr. Barboriak's passing. I was a secretary in Pharmacology with him for a good number of years; I have not one negative memory. I would go to him with my nutrition questions and general chat. Even when I moved to another dept., anytime we saw each other in the cafeteria, he had a friendly greeting. I am sorry for your loss-I'll be praying.

Mrs.Barboriak,and family,
I had the opportunity to meet Dr.Barboriak at the VA in research service. Our ongoing joke after each
converstion we had was "find the money"!
And I would chip in and say "if I find
it I'll split it with you"!
There were times we had lunch together
in the VA canteen, and we always talked
about our families. It was my pleasure
to eat,and talk with him.
I will always try to keep his spirit,
and "money" in my thoughts, which would
mean I would keep him and his family
in my thoughts and prayers.

P.S. If I do find the "green money"
I will get in touch and split it 50/50.

Dear Gertrude and family: I was very sad to hear of Joe's passing today. He was such a wonderful human being as well as scientist and he will be greatly missed by many friends and family and me in particular since he always came to visit my office almost every Thursday at noon for the past several years. He had a keen sense of humor and was always interested in what my lab was doing and if we had enough money to do our research. I looked forward to his visits and missed him when he stopped coming several months ago. I was glad I got to see him at Woodland Hills recently and as usual he made me feel lucky that I had him as a friend and colleague for all these many years here at MCW. I will not be able too attend his mass Saturday as I will be out of town but I will be thinking of you during this hard time and wish you my sincere condolences. Enjoy the many happy memories he must have given you. Sincerely, Garrett Gross Pharmacology Department
