Julius Atkins Obituary

Atkins, Julius Robert A lawyer, real estate developer, naval officer and a longtime leader of the Milwaukee Jewish community, died Sunday in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. He died peacefully at the age of 94 with his wife at his side. Julius Atkins was born in Milwaukee on March 4, 1917, the youngest of 8 children of the late Maurice and Edythe Atinsky. He graduated from North Division High School, and in 1941, from Marquette University with a degree in Social Work. He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 after attending officer training school at Columbia University. He was assigned to the USS Wayne, rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander. The USS Wayne was a naval ship carrying marines for invasions in the Pacific. It was one of the first ships to land in Japan after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In addition to being a landing boat officer during invasions, Julius also took part in legal proceedings aboard ship. He was also head of the officer's mess. Besides the captain, Julius was the only other officer on the ship who served continuously for all 66,000 miles that it traveled, from the time it was commissioned until the end of the war when it was decommissioned. After the war, Mr. Atkins returned to Milwaukee and attended Marquette Law School on the GI Bill. While in law school, he met Mildred Smith. They were married in 1947. After law school, Mr. Atkins formed Atkins-Wahlberg Real Estate with Nate Wahlberg. The firm developed subdivisions in Glendale, Fox Point, Bayside and Wauwatosa. Mr. Atkins was an active member of Milwaukee Jewish community, serving as President of the Jewish Community Center where he was instrumental in developing the Center's camps including Camp Interlaken on Lake Finley in Eagle River and Camp Olin Sang in Fredonia. He also helped in the purchase of Camp B'nai Brith (the Beber Camp) in Mukwonago, WI. He was a member of the Temple Emanu-El Board and was the general contractor for the renovation and expansion of that facility in the 1960's. He was also on the Board of Mount Sinai Hospital. He was chairman of the Milwaukee Jewish Federation in the 1960's. In that capacity, the Atkins' hosted receptions at their house for visiting dignitaries including Abba Eban. They also participated in a state dinner at the White House where they met Yitzhak Rabin. He was a founding member of the first Bnai Brith Youth Organization and later national vice president of the BBYO. He also served as chairman of the Milwaukee United Jewish Appeal. Interested in maintaining Milwaukee's Jewish heritage, Julius and friends Ben Barkin, Julius Rubin and Bud Selig purchased Jake's Delicatessen on 17th and North Avenue in the late 1960's, keeping it in operation. Julius was the managing partner until just a few years ago. Jake's corned beef was well known in Major League Baseball circles and the restaurant became a favorite for influential figures in the sporting and political community. Julius was also active in the Wisconsin Democratic political party and served as an alternate delegate for Eugene McCarthy at the historic 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago. He remained active for much of his long life, playing tennis well into his 80's. He had a quintessential charm that attracted people of all ages to him. Mr Atkins is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mildred Atkins, his children Dr. Maura Keene (Art), Dr. Michael Atkins (Susan Crockin), Dr. Edward Atkins (Cathy), Susan Atkins (Eben Shapiro) and Carol Atkins (David Gottlieb). He leaves 12 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His love of life, his warmth, his wit and the ever present twinkle in his eye will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Funeral services will be held on May 13 at 10 AM at Congregation Emanu-El B'ne Jeshurun located at 2020 W. Brown Deer Rd, River Hills, WI 53217. Dear Aunt Millie, Maura (and Art), Michael (and Susan), Ed (and Cathy), Susan (and Eben) and Carol (and David),

Just today I found out that Uncle Julius had passed away. I am terribly saddened as all of the Raymond clan is, but I know that I am glad over the years that my mom and dad along with the three of us kids were fortunate to have such a wonderful Uncle.

My son Ryan, got to know your dad(husband) as well when he was in search of a job and again he helped to try and pave the way for someone that barely knew him. I can remember many times when I would come up just to visit when in the Milwaukee area and it was just in March the last time I was in Milwaukee and ate at Jakes and his name came up again from the current owner.

I have such fond memories as a child growing up and fun times at your home on Atwahl Drive.
Love,

Dan & Cyndy

Dear Family Atkins,

Milwaukee has lost one of it's own greats from The Greatest Generation. Julius's West Side story is one of of extraordinary adventure, personal courage, professional achievement, and local citizenship, including generosity of both spirit and philanthropy.

Julius's special  gang of
Milwaukee friends shared and  promoted these values together:  our community continues to benefit from their successes.

Those of us lucky enough to have attended with him so many events, ball games ( early days: The Braves. Selig days: The Brewers), graduations, corned beef cut lean (early days: Plotkin's, later days, Jakes) have plenty of fine times  to remember.

Thanks, Julie!

His was a Good Life.

To his family: Condolences.

Dear Sue and the entire Atkins family,
I was saddened to hear of your loss. Even though it has been many years, I recall the warmth your Father showed whenever we met. His spirit of generosity (and patience) showed every time you opened your home to the many friends that loved spending time at Atkins lake. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Atkins Family,
Thank you for being a wonderful part of my childhood and adolescence. From your lake to Lake Finley and beyond, I have such fond memories of all of you. And, Mike, it was a delightful surprise to cross paths with you in our professional lives as well. I know all of you will treasure the many memories you have of your dad and hope you can redirect your tears to those of joy - for appreciation of all he built and all he gave to you, to his country and his community. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Peace be with you.

It's hard to believe that I've known your dad and all of you for nearly 40 years. In fact he was probably my age when I met him. While I can't seem to remember much these days, I do have fond memories of him in Glendale and how he seemed bigger than life. It's no wonder based on the legacy he left and the memories I am sure all of you will hold. Here's to an amazing life and an amazing man. My best wishes are with all of you.

Carol, Wow! I was taken aback at all the prestigious accomplishments of your father. He has passed many of those attributes on to you and your wonderful siblings. I know your Dad will be missed, but he lives on through his accomplishments, his children and his grand children. Sending you a hug from Northfield. Love, Marie

Dear Sue and all of your beautiful family,
I am so sorry to read of your loss. I remember your Dad as a great guy, active in many things - building, tennis and corned beef. With 5 kids - he also had a unique sense of humor. Whenever you spoke of him, you smiled with a sense of pride. As I read about his life experiences, you can't help but realize just how much he "gave back." He'll be missed. My love and thoughts are with all of you.

Dear Carol,
I was just viewing my dad's guestbook, (he died a few weeks ago), and decided to check the obituaries for Gary Reck's young nephew who died on Easter, and a friend of my brother's young son, who died on Mother's Day, when I came across your dad's death notice. I'm so sorry for your loss...what a life he had! Such a legacy. I recognized him immediately, and remember how welcome he and your mom always made me feel whenever I was at your house! :) I love that you talk to him here, and hope you can feel and see him everywhere. Much love and blessings to you and your family.
