Norma Weisfeld Obituary

Weisfeld, Norma (Nee Zeiger) 94, in Delray Beach, FL, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her loving family, on December 23, 2010, after a brief illness. She was a 30-year resident of Delray Beach. Norma was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to the late Gussie Bronzweig Zeiger and the late Nathan Zeiger. She spent her childhood in Duluth, Minn., and Superior, Wis., before settling in Milwaukee as a teenager. After graduating high school, she went to work as a clerical assistant for Checker Express Co., in Milwaukee, owned by her brother-in-law, Robert Lewensohn. She married physician Samuel G. Weisfeld in 1938, and they had two sons. She spent about 20 years as a bookkeeper for Harley's department store in Shorewood. She and her husband were longtime members of Congregation Shalom, and Norma was active with Women's American ORT, mostly as a chapter treasurer. Norma and her husband had many friends in the Milwaukee area. They were skilled ballroom dancers and bridge players and, when the couple moved to Florida, she took up golf, and joined her husband in a creditable game. After his death, she volunteered as a teacher's aide in a local elementary school. Norma is survived by sons Glenn E. Weisfeld and his wife Carol, of Detroit, Mich.; Neil E. Weisfeld and his wife Victoria, of Princeton, N.J.; granddaughters Miriam Weisfeld and Alexandra Dowling and her husband, Bryan Dowling; great-grandchildren Lincoln and Indiana Dowling; many much-loved nephews and nieces, scattered around the country, who visited her regularly in Florida; and special friends Judy Oxman of Milwaukee and Bea Barron of Delray Beach. Services will be held at 1 PM Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at Northshore Funeral Services, 3601 N. Oakland Avenue, Shorewood, WI. Rabbi Ronald Shapiro will officiate. Interment at Spring Hill Cemetery, 166 S. Hawley Ct., Milwaukee. The family extends special appreciation to the supportive administrative personnel and wonderful caregivers at the Abbey Delray Health Center and Hospice by the Sea. In lieu of flowers, those who would like to make a contribution in Norma's memory may do so to Women's American ORT, Hospice by the Sea (Boca Raton, FL), or the charity of their choice.

As a friend of Neil's since our freshman year at UW (i.e. Madison) I have a pleasant memory of visiting Neil's family homestead in Whitefish Bay. I recall Norma's ease to be around, even for someone's parent, and her patience with our adolescent ways.
Norma and I were reacquainted just a few years ago when the Weisfeld clan was in Boston, and I was pleased to affirm my memory of her as a fun and interesting person to be around. Farewell.

I was so saddened to learn of the loss of your dear mother Norma. We were friends for over 60 years as were our husbands, Sam and Clarence. She was warm, caring, and thoughtful of others. She will be missed...Mrs. Clarence(Shirley)Jacobson.

We had the pleasure of meeting Grammy Weisfeld in Chicago and sharing brunch with her a few years ago. And then we saw her again at the wedding of Alix and Bryan. We were honored to have made her acquaintance and offer our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends. Jill & David Stewart
