Penelope Korkos Obituary

Korkos, Penelope Gialamas Passed away peacefully with her family at her side on June 15, 2017. Survived by her husband of 59 years, Dr. George Korkos. She was the love of his life. She is further survived by her children James (Christine) Korkos, Thomas (Christina) Korkos, and Kathryn (Charles) Theofilos; her grandchildren, Alexa, Nicole, Demetra, George and Maria Korkos, and Stefan, Nicholas, and James Theofilos; her brother, George Gialamas; her loving nieces and nephews, other family and many friends. Penny is now happily reunited with her sisters and parents in Heaven. Penny was born in Chicago on March 15, 1935. She later attended Lindblom High School and Chicago Teachers College. She taught in Chicago until she married George Korkos on August 17, 1958. After they moved to Milwaukee, Penny taught at General Mitchell School and Jefferson School in Wauwatosa. She was very involved in many philanthropic organizations. Among her favorites were the National Philoptochos Board where she served for more than 10 years, Junior Achievement where she originated the Christmas Auction, and the Milwaukee Symphony Women's League where she chaired eight Fashion Shows and two Symphony Balls. Penny was a lady of such elegance and sophistication, that when she walked into a room her presence was felt. She taught us through her strength and perseverance how never to give up. She was an involved and loving Nona whose grandchildren were her world. She was always willing to share her endless advice, which ultimately helped us to become better people. The light in her eyes will live on in us forever. Visitation at the Funeral Home on Sunday, June 18, from 4-7PM. Trisagion at 7PM. Additional visitation Monday, at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 9400 W. Congress St., at 11AM to 12 noon. Service at 12 noon. Burial to follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Aunt Pen was my beloved Mother's older sister. She was an exemplary woman, Wife, Mother, Aunt and friend. She, like my mother, was one of the core of a Greek-American success story, a family of beautiful, loving, intelligent, kind, hard working and driven people. She emplified motherly sweetness and warmth always ensuring we felt loved and cared for, driven to succeed and "were well fed". She always lit up a room with her infectious smile. She danced with me at my wedding subbing for my mom and explained how proud she was of me during a very challenging time. She genuinely missed my mom always reminded me of my mom.
She like her sisters, brother and cousin John ensured her family made the most of their lives through family bonds, education and hard work providing the strong foundation for their success. People like her are rare examples of what makes this Country a better place. She was blessed with a massive, beautiful family and lived an exciting life. My only regret was not giving her a call in the last month so I can share info about my kids.
My present handicap prevents me from attending services for her so I would like to thank her for being an important part of my life and am quite sure her "light" on earth will be missed my many, many people. God Bless her soul, my Uncle, Cousins and the rest of the Korkos, Gialamas, Gonis, Toscas, Mitsakopoulos family and friends.

Love, Tom, Anne Marie, Peter and Jennifer Kotsos

To the Entire Korkos Clan,

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family for your loss; Penny was a kind and energetic woman who was always ready with a smile and a hug. Penny and George were always quick to welcome folks into their home -- especially our group of young Greek men during high school / college years -- and the home was always alive with laughter, talking, phones ringing and dogs barking (all at the same time) which made it a great place to be. (Tommy and Ted, you know exactly what I mean...)

May Penny's memory be eternal! We will keep the entire Korkos family in our prayers during this difficult time but rest assured that Penny would be happy that she was able to bring the family together for one last time...:)

With Love,

My name is Kymberly Kotsos-Malkin and Penny was my loving aunt. She has had a profound impact on me since I was a small child and has taught me so many things over the course of my life. Speaking for myself and her nieces who have witnessed the power of her influence, sophistication, devotion, character and strength allows a part of Aunt Penny to live on through us. We loved all loved our our aunts and miss them dearly. I had the priviledge of talking to Aunt Penny on April 30th and I am so grateful that I had a chance to have that talk before her passing. Deepest condolences and blessings for my cousins Tom, Jim and Kathy and their families and my Uncle George Korkos.
