Peter VandenBerg Obituary

VandenBerg, Peter Hughes On March 31, 2008, Peter Hughes VandenBerg, at the age of 50, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loving family members. Peter was diagnosed with brain cancer April 12, 2007, and met this challenge, as he did his entire life, with Faith and Courage, and the support of his family and friends "Team Vandy". Peter appreciated the outpouring of loving support and prayers throughout his life, and especially during this last year. Peter was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He graduated from Kenyon College where he met his beloved wife and life partner Nancy Todd VandenBerg. After college he worked in New York City and moved to Milwaukee in 1991 to work for Robert W. Baird. Peter's experiences shaped his firm belief in the importance of honesty, integrity, and hard work, and were a perfect fit with the Baird culture. He considered his move to Milwaukee and working at Robert W. Baird to be one of the best things that ever happened to him. Peter was a huge tennis fan, was voted the most valuable player at Kenyon College in 1980, sojourned with his family to Flushing Meadow every year to experience the US Open Tennis Tournament, and has shared this passion with his children and anyone else who would listen. His son Will VandenBerg plays on the varsity tennis team at Kenyon College and continues the tradition. Visitation will be held at the Feerick Funeral Home on Thursday, April 3, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. A memorial service will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, 5655 N. Lake Dr. in Whitefish Bay, on Friday, April 4, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be in Grand Rapids at a later date. Memorials in Peter's name can be made to Kenyon College, Men's Tennis, 103 Chase Avenue, Gambier, OH 43022 or the Tim and Tom Gullikson Foundation, 8000 Sears Tower, Chicago, IL 60606. (The Tim and Tom Gullikson Foundation aides patients of brain cancer and their families.) Peter will be fondly remembered and missed for his humor and storytelling, as well as his kindness and goodness. He is survived by his beloved wife Nancy Todd VandenBerg, and their three children, Will, Sarah, and Andy. He is the loved son of Shirley VandenBerg and his deceased father, William VandenBerg, of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was the cherished brother of W. Christian VandenBerg (Elizabeth Neubig), Juliana VandenBerg (Norman Schwartz), and Susan Cupaiuolo (Nino). He is further survived by caring nieces and nephews, devoted in-laws, other relatives and wonderful friends. Very sad to hear of Peter's demise. He was truly one of the great ones in our industry. His thoughtfulness, ability to communicate, and always making the extra effort made him special. I am sure the enthusiasm he brought to his job was similar to what he brought to family and friends. He will truly be missed.

It was with great sadness that I learned of Peter's passing. I had the great honor and pleasure of working with Peter for 5 years back in the 1980's. Peter was truly a person of great character and compassion. His honesty, his dedication and his love of family are qualities that carried him forward. He will truly be missed.

I was deeply saddened to read the news of Peter. I remember him as a wonderful spirit. Although, I haven't seen him since I was much younger, living nearby, his memories of his youth made me smile. Our families shared the same interest in tennis, schools and neighborhoods.
May God bless his family and friends and help you to endure his departure.
With deepest sympathies,

Chris,

I am very sad to hear of Peter's death and want you to know that my thoughts and prayers are with you, your mother and your entire family in this difficult time.

I remember, many years ago, meeting with Peter (at your request, I think) when he was contemplating moving from "Wall Street" back to the midwest and closer to "home". I thought he was a very impressive young man and his life's accomplishments confirm my opinion.

I also fondly remember that, at that time ,you and Peter played a couple of sets of paddle with J. Delavan and me and you two quickly put us away and cleverly quieted Delavan's chatter.
