Ray Bender Obituary

Bender, Ray S., Jr. MD Ray S. Bender, Jr. MD died Monday, May 7, 2012, at Froedtert Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. He was born in Appleton, WI on May 30, 1948 and was the son of the late Ray S. Bender, Sr. and Florence Miller Bender. He was the beloved husband of Christina C. Keppel, MD. He is preceded in death by his sister Susan. Dr. Bender attended elementary and high school in Appleton. He was a faithful choir member as a boy at Appleton Congregational Church. He went on to achieve a BA in Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He studied Bio-chemistry, published in the area of Gene Transcription and worked as an instructor at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado after which he received his MS in 1974. He then pursued his teaching certificate after which he began his career in Appleton Area School District as a Junior and Senior High School Science Teacher until 1981 when he moved to Kenosha and then West Allis/West Allis Schools to live in the big city. In 1998 he decided, again, to make a big change and applied and was accepted to the Medical College of Wisconsin. He continued to publish articles in local and national publications. His favorite and most personal essay was in 1996 for the Wisconsin Psychiatrist, "Becoming a Star Thrower". After a year as a Family Practice Resident he began his Psychiatric training and then joined, his then wife, Christina Keppel, in private practice. He was a Diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners since 1993, is an Attending Physician affiliated with Columbia St. Mary's Hospital, and is a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He was a valuable addition to the professional staff at East Town Professional Associates, not just as a capable physician but a constant source of conversation and optimistic outlook. He could solve many IT problems and remembered everyone's birthdays and important anniversaries, especially Administrative Professionals Day. It is so hard to capture all of Ray's talents, skills and attributes in any distilled form: psychiatrist, therapist, educator, Op-Ed writer, IT fix-it guy, birder, cat lover, foodie, world traveler, sailor, wit, sports fan, musician, car and motorcycle buff, book addict, angler, kayaker, golfer, student of politics, and I'm sure I'm missing a few more in there. He has been a lively attendee of monthly services at the Ecumenical Christ Pond Retreat Center in Random Lake. Visitation will be held Thursday, May 10, from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM at the Feerick Funeral Home. Services will be held Friday at 10:00 AM at the North Shore Congregation Church, 7330 N. Santa Monica Blvd, Fox Point. Memorials in Dr. Bender's name can be made to WUWM Milwaukee Public Radio, Box 88890, Milwaukee, WI 53288-0001, Christ Pond Foundation, 921 E. Calumet Rd., Milwaukee, WI 53217 or National Kidney Foundation, 30 East 33rd St., New York, NY 10016.

My sympathies to Dr. Bender and his family. He was my psychiatrist for the past several years and he honestly saved my life during a very rough patch. He was warm and caring. Careful to take his time and never cared about rushing you out the door. As a new therapist myself, he was an invaluable source of career advice and inspiration. Taking time to act as a mentor for me, as well as his insights, truly have made me a better therapist. He was a rare person that I will dearly miss.

I mentioned in an earlier condolence note that Dr. Bender saved my Mom's life, for that we will always be thankful. When Mom was put into his loving care I hadn't met Dr. Bender. He called me at home, took his evening time to comfort me. We talked for over an hour, he immediately impressed me. To have met Dr. Bender was a blessing, to have met Dr. Bender was to love him.

Ray was in the process of helping my husband through a very difficult period in his life. We are shocked and very, very sad with his passing. A devastating loss for those who knew him.

Ray and I met after the sixth grade, when we took a typing class in the summer of 1960. He became a good typist; I never got the knack.

We were great friends through high school and college, and he always made me laugh, as he apparently did for many others writing in this book.

Ray had a superb mind that never lost or misplaced a piece of information once it was learned. He loved his gadgets, and always had a new one which he was in the process of mastering.

In high school, he often spoke of wanting to become a surgeon, but his path to medicine was obviously not direct.

He appeared to have found his calling in psychiatry. Based on the comments of his patients, the world is clearly a poorer place without him.

We lost touch some years ago, which was mostly my fault. I will dearly miss his great wit and sprit.

Ray was my friend for forty years. We met at a time in my life when my world was crashing down around me. I remember us sitting together one night in his room in a Madison, Wisconsin rooming house, while he listened patiently and sympathetically to the many misfortunes that had befallen me in the months just passed. Then with a few kind words of understanding and encouragement, he showed me the way to regain my lost hope. Without his wise counsel, I doubt I would ever have found my way again, and had I not, the full, rich life I now enjoy might never have happened. So I thank you, my friend, for my life, and I bid you goodbye. I shall miss you more than I can ever say.

I'll never forget the day Ray told me he was quitting his teaching job to go to medical school… at age 40. What courage it took to totally “restart” his life and spend so much time retraining for a new vocation. Reading the comments posted here, it's obvious that taking that direction was very worthwhile. He changed so many lives for the better. I will greatly miss his kindness, humor, knowledge and sense of social justice. My deepest sympathies to Tina, the staff and all of us who feel this loss so deeply. I hope he knew what a difference his life made.

I'm still in shock over Dr. Bender's passing. I'm having a very hard time with this and I am sure a lot of other people feel the same way that wasn't a patient of Dr. Bender. Dr. Bender was more then just my doctor he was my friend. Words can't express on how much I will miss you Ray.

I was stunned to learn of Dr. Bender's death. I'm very saddened. As a patient, I felt very comfortable with him and I'd like to think in another environment we would have been friends. We laughed but he was also very kind and good at getting to important things. I think he 'got' me. I'll miss him and think of him.

It was so sad to see the passing of Ray Bender in the Milwaukee Journal. Our family and the Bender family shared the same weeks of vacation in the 50's & 60's at Dillmans Sand Lake Lodge. "Butch" and Susan were such great friends during those vacations. I am pleased to see that he had such a full life and was so loved by those he touched. I only regret that we did not have contact as adults. Our prayers and thoughts are with the family...........it is so difficult to deal with loss of one so young with so much to give.

What I'll remember most about Ray is the way he valued his relationships. Especially as Uncle to my son! With Uncle Ray Chris discovered such wonders as The Pretty Good Joke Book and The Dangerous Book for Boys; he taught him about pasttimes like baseball, sports cars and motorcycles; wallace & grommit (cheese!); and the interest and drive to achieve academically.
We loved him, and for all this and so much more we will miss him.

May 9, 2012

My deepest sympathies go out to Dr. Bender's families and everyone that he touched their lives. I was a patient of Dr. Benders, and I can tell you he was a wonderful man. We often got side tracked with stories about our past lives, laughed many many times together. I would be watching the clock so he would not run behind, but he always did. He wasn't there to rush you out the door. He truly will be missed.

Ray is a good friend of ours. I will miss his great sense of humor.

My sympathies to Dr. Bender's family. We were honored to know Dr. Bender. He truly saved my Mother's life.... without him I know we would not have had another beautiful five years with her. During her visits with Dr. Bender they were more like good friends than doctor/patient. His smile, twinkle in his eyes, and easy manner were invaluable. We have all lost a valuable man but Heaven has gained a beautiful angel.
