Richard Karon Obituary

Karon, Richard T. "Dick" Of Jamestown, RI. Age 66. On Thursday, July 8, 2010, he passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family and dog Buddy, from pancreatic cancer. He was the husband of Linda Wirth Karon. Born in Whitefish Bay, WI on October 3, 1943, he was the son of the late Vera Block Karon and Morris Karon. Dick graduated from Carleton College and earned his PhD in systems engineering from The University of Pennsylvania. Recently retired from his position of Engineering Fellow and IRAD Director at Raytheon in Portsmouth, RI, Dick was involved in Toastmasters International, where he earned the title of Distinguished Toastmaster several times over and found a ready audience for his sense of humor. He enjoyed volunteering and mentoring for various organizations, including Boy Scouts of America, and felt strongly that his donation of time and energy would make the world a better place. A lover of nature and sailing, Dick lived his life passionately and fully to the end. Since boyhood, Dick spent time with his family in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, riding horses, fishing, hiking, camping, and climbing The Grand Teton. Dick is survived by his wife of 41 years, Linda, his daughter Jennifer Karon-Flores and son-in-law Bill Karon-Flores of Portland, OR, his son Jonathan Karon and daughter-in-law Lori Snow of Portland, OR, his brother John Karon of Albuquerque, NM, his brother Jim Karon of Milwaukee, WI, and his beautiful granddaughters Sadie, Rhienna, and Hazel, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins. A celebration of Dick's life will be held for family and friends at Channing Memorial Church, 135 Pelham St., in Newport, RI, on Thursday, July 15, at 4 PM. Memorial donations may be made to The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network www.pancan.org, and The Jackson Hole Land Trust www.jhlandtrust.org.

I knew Dick from Toastmasters. He made many contributions to our organization and his fellow Toastmasters. It was a pleasure to see him awarded his "Distinguished Toastmaster" Award. Dick truly was a distinguished Toastmaster. He will be remembered with fondness and greatly missed.

In an industry where it is tempting to take shortcuts, Dick was a man of integrity. He taught me that it's always worth taking the time to do the job right. I think this attitude may be the greatest gift he has given his co-workers.

My heartfelt condolences to family and friends.

As one of Dick's co-workers at Raytheon in Portsmouth RI, I was always impressed by his thoughtful, intelligent and patient attention to details and his eagerness to help others. He will be greatly missed.

I will always have fond memories of Dick. He managed to combine an honest dedication to detail and doing the right thing with a kindness and consideration that recognized the efforts of others. I appreciated his guidance and his tolerance. A truly good man.
