During those years, he served as an educator in Pediatrics for the Medical College of Wisconsin, teaching medical students and house staff. He became Associate Professor of Clinical Pediatrics and gained the title of Diplomat of the American Board of Pediatrics in 1964. Upon retiring from private practice in Wisconsin, he and his family moved to Florida where he served the health departments of Walton and Okaloosa Counties as a staff pediatrician. He continued teaching medical students and nurses during these years until his retirement in 2002. He enjoyed camping with his children, gardening, golfing, fishing and genealogy. He attended St. Joseph Catholic Church, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Adrian and Resurrection Catholic Church in Florida. He is survived by a brother and a sister, six children, 16 grandchildren, and a great-grandson. He was preceded in death by Suzanne Atkinson. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Adrian. Please accept my Sincere Condolences on the loss of Dr. Atkinson. Doctor was my Pediatrician when I was very young, as well as all 8 of my siblings.
My mother and I where just talking about the good Doctor, wondering where he was, or if mom heard anything about him. I proceeded to mention how I remembered his kindness and gentleness.
To the entire Atkinson Family; you are in my thoughts and prayers.
