Frederick Stevens Obituary

Longtime Douglas and Juneau resident Frederick J. Stevens Sr., 85, passed on June 10, 2022. Fred's Tlingit name was Tanook.

Fred was born at St. Ann's hospital in Juneau to Joseph and Julia Stevens. He went to the St. Ann's School and both the Douglas and Juneau-Douglas High Schools. He lived in Minnesota and Seattle as he worked through the Laborers Union. Later settling in Juneau again in 1986.

Fred loved watching college basketball, the Gold Medal basketball tournament, and reliving his glory days playing high school basketball for both the Douglas Huskies, and Juneau Douglas Crimson Bears.

Growing up in Douglas Fred worked at the Douglas Cannery and went to Taku River in the summers with family. At age 16 Fred was presented with a Carnegie Medal for Heroism after he saved a 10-year-old boy from drowning in the Gastineau Channel when he fell off a Douglas dock while fishing.

Fred loved life and was grateful for all who The Good Lord put in his path. Fred attended Thunder Mountain Church of God. He volunteered at the church until his health started to fail. He shared the cards and letters of appreciation he received from the Pastor with family.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joe, Calvin, and Walter Stevens, sisters Leona Charles, Lillian Cameron, Josephine Stevens, and Mary Ann Butler. He is survived by his children Fred Jr., Angela Wyatt, Lisa Fisher, Rochelle, and Renee Stevens, brothers Henry and Louis Stevens, and sister Rosemary Mill (Ken). My sweet grandpa, he loved to feed the ravens every morning. I will never forget watching Wheel of Fortune and going to Valley Church of God with him every sunday. Him and my grandmother Hazel Hope taking care of me every other weekend. Grandpa always had lots of parakeet birds. Tanook. Rest in love Grandpa

I had the pleasure of working with the alway-affable Fred when I was in the Laborer's Union. Fred was a great concrete guy and always a hard worker. May he now rest in peace.

Dear Fred! He and I were friends through St. Ann's School, Juneau High School, and in the first year of Juneau-Douglas High School. Fred was a feisty basketball player, in the Johnny Ebona style. Through everything, Fred would grin, roll his eyes, and carry on. He is greatly loved and missed!
