John Nelson Obituary

John Frederick Nelson, 58, of Juneau, Alaska, passed away on June 7, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family and friends.
Born on September 12, 1966, in Petersburg, Alaska, to Don and Betty Nelson, John grew up in his hometown, where he formed many lifelong friendships.
After graduating from Petersburg High School in 1984, he spent time in Washington State and Juneau before attending Oregon Polytechnic Institute in Portland, where he trained as a draftsman. He spent several years working in Portland and the San Francisco Bay Area before returning to Juneau.
John dedicated nine years to Toner, Nordling & Associates in Juneau before continuing his career as a project manager for the City and Borough of Juneau, where he spent 24 years making lasting contributions to the community through his work.
He is survived by his three daughters, Emily Nelson, Alyssa (Trevan) Nelson-Coleman , and Mallorie Weigman; his father, Don Nelson, of Petersburg; his brother, Mike (Karen) Tennison; his sister, Carol (Jay) Druyvestein; his nephews and niece, Aaron, Nick, and Katie Druyvestein; his niece, Kelley Tennison; and his uncle, Robert (Patty) Nelson, also from Petersburg.
In his final days, John was comforted by his brothers-in-spirit, Rich Beal and Dan Dawson, and his close friend, Lisa Pusich.
John was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Nelson; his brothers, Dale Tennison and Clyde Tennison; and his sister, Karen Flyum.
John had a deep love for the water, with a particular passion for sailing. In keeping with his wishes, his ashes will be spread off Point Loma in San Diego.
He will be remembered for his warmth, quiet strength, and deep love for his family.

Meeting John and Rich in 1984, was the beginning of a long friendship. Any time we got together it was like we had never been apart. That´s because we were and always will be brothers. Our meetings will never be the same but our memories of him will always be a part of us. I miss you John, and your quirky sense of humor. Goodbye my friend, until we meet again...

My deepest sympathies to the Nelson family on the passing of John. I know John was looking forward to retirement and sailing in San Diego Bay. I fondly remember with a smile the many projects we worked on over the past twenty five years. John always thanked me for hiring him at the City back in 2000. John was well liked and respected by all that he worked with in Juneau´s public works construction industry. We will miss him. Rest in peace my friend.
