Madeline Nance Obituary

Madeline Michele Nance
June 26, 1994 - December 13, 2012 Madeline Michelle Nance, born June 26, 1994 in Juneau, Alaska, died December 13, 2012 in Sacramento, California. She was a 2012 graduate of Thunder Mountain High School.
In grade school and middle school she was active in swimming and soccer. She also had a beautiful singing voice, as well as a passion for ballet where she excelled to pointe shoes and was cast as "girl doll" in a production of the Nutcracker.
She was intellectually active, questioned authority wherever possible, and sided with the under dog. She enjoyed music, movies, reading, cooking and baking. She was attending Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts at the time of her death.
She loved animals. Her many pets included everything from mice, horses, guppies, chickens, fish, three dogs, a horse, numerous cats and a chinchilla.
During summers she visited her grandmother's ranch in Oregon, where she truly was a cowgirl. She spent most of her time riding her Appaloosa, Spot. They covered many miles of sagebrush and forest.
She also loved children and at family gatherings would spend her time playing with younger cousins and her new nephew, Elijah.
Madeline is survived by her mother Christine Moleski and loving step-father, Stephen Masters of Juneau; sister Amanda Underwood (Dan) and nephew Elijah, Indianapolis, IN; grandparents Wendy Moleski, Jesse Moleski, Syracuse, NY; Aunt Mary Landale (Ed), Medford, MA; Uncle John Moleski, Palm Beach, FL; Aunt Anna Cohen (Craig), NYC, NY; Uncle Jeffrey Moleski, Syracuse, NY; Aunt Sharon Moleski (Richard), Eatontown, NJ; grandparents Hank and Kay Masters, Juneau; Uncle Mark (Stacy) Masters, Carson City, NV; Uncle Eric (Leola) Masters, Juneau; Aunt Melissa (Paul) Zahasky, Juneau; and cousins Timothy, Jeffrey, Claudia, Arden, Maya, Sarah, Henry, Alex, Rachel (Tom), Harrison, Ben, Karlyn (Bryan), Laura, Quinn, and Abigail.
Also, her father, Ivan Nance (partner Lauren) of Juneau; grandparents Bonnie Nance, Prairie City, OR; Ralph Nance, Pendleton, OR; and Uncle Jay Nance, Boise, ID.
Even in her death, Madeline wanted to be able to help others, saving strangers' lives by being an organ donor. We believe Madeline was called to heaven to be a comforting angel for those needing love and compassion. She would want us to forever believe something wonderful is coming and to never take for granted the day and the joy it brings. To remember her, make the most of the time you have with your children, family and friends. Smile, cherish the little things and remember to hug the ones you love.
A memorial service will take place on December 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Centennial Hall. Condolences may be sent to: PO Box 32976, Juneau, AK 99803 (Moleski/Masters), 3310 Nowell Street, Juneau, AK, 99801 (Nance)
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gastineau Humane Society in her name.
Published by Juneau Empire from Dec. 21, 2012 to Jan. 20, 2013.

Today marks three years since your death. I still wake each morning with a pain in my body so intense; that helpless deep sadness that can only be caused by such a loss -
Missing you, Madeline, has been the hardest thing I have ever had to do in my life.

Madeline, not a day goes by that you are not missed. I ate some of your ice cream last night and it was nice to feel close to you. Eli asked about you, he asked me where you went. I told him you are an angel watching over him. I am thankful he has you watching over him. I wish you were here to cook with me. I think about you all the time. Love you Maddie. Love Rachel. :)

The loss of a child is so very very difficult. May you draw comfort from the following: At Psalm 56:8 David pleaded to God: "Do put my tears in your skin bottle. Are they not in your book? Like David I know that God is aware of your pain and what you are going through emotionally. He will continue to give you what you need to live each day without Madeline.

Maddie,

It is extremely difficult for me to see your family in such excruciating pain over your loss. You were such a funny and gorgeous girl, with the most beautiful smile. You always made me feel so welcome in the family. I am very glad to have visited with you this past Thanksgiving. I only wish I could have gotten to know you better. I know your loss has instilled true sorrow into those who love you, but I hope they will find solace in all the happy memories you leave behind.

Ivan, I received an E-Mail from Rich Mac of Sitka w/ regards to Madeline's death. Rich mentiioned you many times over the years and I met you through Juneau Coast Guard where I've worked since 1988. My third child (son) was born in 1994 in Juneau and the thought of losing a young adult child is overwhelming. I can only hope and pray that you (and family) find comfort, understanding, and support from all the good folks that hold you dear.

You might not remember me, but I was a patient of yours, Christine, and I knew your daughter from school. Maddie was one of the few people that was honestly nice to me and he death is shocking to me. I'm actually sad about this.

Madeline you had a way of making others feel so welcome, happy and joyful. Although the pain of you moving on to heaven is crippling, I know the world will forever be a better place because of who you were and what you did. I desperately wish I could be at your service, but I'm out of town. In your remembrance I will always finish the day letting my family know I love them because that is how you treated me. Thank you Maddy, you are a bright light that will shine on through those who you loved. I learned much from you younger cousin, thank you.

A couple of years ago, my family decided that, instead of the adults exchanging gifts anymore, we would, instead, put money into a pot and our names on slips of paper into another. Someone would draw one name, and that person would decide the charity in which the collected money would get donated to. Before we draw names, we tell a everyone a little about the charity in which we chose. My dad and grandfather chose the Shriner's (my grandfather is a Shriner), my aunt chose St Jude's, my future sister in law chose Sandy Hook. When it was my turn, I told my family about Maddie. I told them what happened, and that in her obituary it mentioned that donations could be made to the Gastineau Humane Society in her name. I told my family that if my name were drawn, that's where I would want the money to go. This year, my name came out of that pot. The humane society will be receiving a donation in the amount of $406 courtesy of the Williams Family. I couldn't believe it. I lost it when my grandpa said my name. It felt very right.

It's been two and a half weeks, yet it still doesn't feel real, Maddie. I miss you so much! I miss hearing your impressions and listening to you talk about all the things you would show me in Alaska. I miss talking about the things I would take you to do when you came to visit me in Santa Cruz. Chocolate bacon on the Boarkwalk, disc golf, hiking off of Highway 9, shopping downtown. You are thought of daily.

My love, thoughts, prayers go out to Christine and the rest of the family. I wish more than anything that I could be there to show you my support tomorrow, but know that I will be there in spirit. Maddie will never be lost or forgotten. I promise.

Maddie I will always remember you for the kind hearted fun loving person you were. Getting to know you this year was a blessing and I'm so sorry we ended things on not the greatest terms I hope you are in heaven knowing that I'm sorry and that I love and miss you girl. We were both new to sacramento and it was fun exploring it with you. This past summer when we spent hours floating down the Sacramento River eating sandwiches enjoying the sun are some of my favorite days ever and I'm so thankful for the memories. You taught me a lot about people and not sweating the small stuff and you made me laugh so much. I'm going to miss you and never forget you. My thoughts and prayers are with your family may they take comfort in knowing you are in heaven<3

Maddie,
The last week of school was hard without you. I hope you got the balloons we signed and released for you. You were too young to leave us, but I must believe it was for a reason. You taught me many things in life. We shared many many laughs together. Forgetting the pie the roof of my car, decorating your car for your B-day, you dancing allll the time in class. We miss you pretty lady.

It's so hard to know what to say about the loss of a child-- at any age and for any reason. The story of Maddie's life is a beautiful tribute to a great kid with great parents. Thank you for sharing this. She clearly had many gifts to share with those she touched. God called her to his Kingdom early for a reason-- he always seems to take the really great ones first. I am praying for you both- Christine and Steve, and for your family. I pray that you find comfort and peace in knowing that she is with The Lord.

Last summer I spent ten days visiting Christine, Stephen and Madeline at their home in Juneau. It was an amazing journey for me and Madeline was a huge part of it. I remember vividly pulling out porcupine quills out of her dog's nose. Hanging out with her while Christine was at work was so much fun. A beautiful young woman with so much to give. My daughter shares the same name and I will always remember that incredible smile and life force she had. May the wings of angels comfort you. I will miss you dearly.
