While attending Georgia Tech in 1940, he joined the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet. He received his pilot's wings in December 1941. In June 1942, he was part of the initial cadre of B-17 bombers to deploy to England and Africa. One of his most memorable experiences of WW II was flying General Eisenhower to Gibraltar under difficult circumstances for which Ike wrote him a congratulatory letter that Gene treasured and gave to the Eisenhower Presidential Library in 2014. After returning to the US, he was stationed at Pratt Army Air Field as part of the first unit to train future B-29 crews. While at Pratt, he met and married the former Lida Elizabeth (Betty) Fincham on December 29, 1945. After completing his degree at UNC, Gene continued his military career. He had many distinguished assignments including working for General Curtis LeMay at SAC HQ, being assigned to the NATO HQ in Oslo, Norway, briefing President Kennedy on nuclear war plans while working with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, commanding a C-130 Wing during the Vietnam War and his final assignment as the Director of Airlift at TAC HQ. Retiring in 1970, his distinguished Air Force career spanned three wars. Survivors include his children, Jack (Jodi) of Plano, TX, Cathy Songer, and Jim (Susan) of Trophy Club, TX. Gene has 2 granddaughters, 2 great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, his parents, and 2 brothers. Such a sweet man, you Dad. Our parents were able to maintain their strong friendship for 59 years. That's pretty impressive! We have great role models to live up to!

Love and sympathy to you all, as you adjust to this new reality. He will be missed by many.

Dear Cathy, Jack, and Jim. Well, that sweetest of men finally let go of his hold on his precious life. I, for one, have many fond memories of who he was as a person. As a child, I don't remember many of my parents friends, but I do about your Dad and Mom. I know they were there for us at some very important times, for which I am so grateful. But your Dad was sweet and attentive to me from when I was a child. He would take the time to show me his train collection, and he explained carefully how to create a bonsai tree. Col. Aenchbacher was an individual with a warm smile, a gentle nature, and a big heart. He meant a great deal to the Hardin family, and to me. I regret I didn't get out to hug him and thank him personally. My love to you all.

Col. Aenchbacher, I have often thought of you since I retired from CCC and the great chats we would have during the buffets. You regaled many a person about the fact that we both were on Mactan Island in the Philippines in Aug of 1966...me rotating to Vietnam in the Army and you stationed there permanently with the USAF. We never met until my stint at CCC starting in 1999 but it always was as if we were old buddies. That was the beauty of being your friend and I will always treasure our relationship. I am so sad to hear of your passing but I will always have fond memories of you and Betty and the great tales you could tell. Serving you, your family and friends was always a pleasure.

The Lord is my pilot, I shall not drift.
He lighteth me across the dark skies;

He steereth me through the deepest clouds.
He keepeth my flight log.
He guideth me by the star of holiness for his namesake.

Yea though I sail mid the thunders and tempests of life,
I shall dread not danger, for thou art near me.

Thy love and care, they shelter me.
Thou preparest a harbor before me in the homeland of eternity.
Thou anointest my course with oil, my aircraft rideth calmly.

Surely sunlight and starlight shall favor me on the voyage I take,
And I will rest in the port of my God forever.

Rest Arthur, until you hear at dawn,
the low, clear reveille of God.

Thank you for your service to this nation.
