12•10•2018: My 22nd anniversary of my living donor kidney transplant was Dec 9th, 2018. Diabetes was triggered following surgery. Living at Victory in the Valley, I saw him daily. My A1C is still below 6.5 because he taught me how to deal with it. Looking for his address to send a card today, I found his obituary. I am saddened by his passing and will be forever grateful to him. My kidney is still functioning and my A1C remains below 6.5. My condolences.

To the family of Dr. Shield:
I have been a patient of his since the 80s and have always considered him "my surgeon" as he performed 2 hernia surgeries, a thyroidectomy, and oddly he removed a kidney from me (I was the first patient of his after he took a vacation in October of 2006 to be there for his granddaughter's birth. I had been going to the same urologist as my son used for his spina bifida and when he retired the new one looked at my x-ray (or whatever) and declared that I needed to have it removed immediately as it was cancerous. We had been watching a cyst for a year or two and had drained it twice already but I had a trip planned the next week with my daughter and did not want to cancel so I sought the advice of Dr. Shield and he said it wasn't going anywhere and that I was safe to take my trip but he would be on vacation when I got back but I would be his first patient when he got back to work. I can't say that it was a pleasurable experience in the hospital as I kept hallucinating at night that I was in a little trailer behind something pulling me along which was really a night light in the room but it worked out fine in the end.
I can remember having a pain in my side and asking my doctor what it was and he just said it was a hernia. I asked who was I to see about it and he said a surgeon and I asked about Dr. Shield and he just kind of looked at me and said "Chuck Shield - for a hernia? I don't know but I will ask and the next day I saw Dr. Shield and he performed the operation. He also performed an ostomy for my son with spina bifida who was having a lot of trouble with his lack of any control in school and I had the feeling that it might help and he agreed and gave him what had to be a great new feeling of independence even though it did have to be moved at a later date because of a hernia it developed. He also offered at one time, when my daughter had no insurance and thought she was going to need some type of surgery, to do it for nothing. As I said "Dr. Shield was MY surgeon" and I referred him to other people in need of his type of doctoring "which covered much more than his title could ever say.
Oh, and did I mention that he was ALSO a great OU Sooners football fan and he loved to talk about that just as I did.
I went to the funeral but left shortly after the actual services as I now have peripheral neuropathy with balance problems that I also asked him to refer me to someone about my problem which was causing me balance problems in 2011 and it was particularly bad that day and I wasn't looking to steal the limelight by falling down at some point.
I could go on and on but feel I already have probably overextended my say but I was just starting to get up when my wife read his name in the paper and it hit me so hard for so many reasons, I mean, this was "my surgeon" and I just felt he should have many more years on earth and didn't know he was ill. May the Good Lord bless him and may he be blessed for all the good he did whilst among God's children.

To the Shield's family
Dr Shield has given me two kidneys in the past. I simply can not thank him enough (as I've done through out my life) for what he has done for me and tons of others. He has given to so many a second chance life to be able to live the life to the fullest. In my book he has and always be the best doctor. Never forget the moments at hospital when I happened to be his last patient he took his time sat next to me to discuss politics. May god bless his soul and may his soul continues to soar in the unseen world of mysteries.
At the end I'd like to share a poem from a Persian poet, Saadi. A good man never dies

O Saadi, a man with a good name will hever die; those die who do not live with a good name.
This sure applies to him. He's never dead in our hearts. He left behind a great legacy that is his transplant patient(s).
Once again our thoughts and prayers to you all and for the progress of his gentle soul
