David Quick Obituary

David Lee Quick

October 9, 1945 - April 1, 2024

Wichita, Kansas - David Lee Quick, 78, of Wichita, died on Monday, April 1, 2024.

David was the son of Harold and Christine Quick. He graduated from Wichita North High School in 1963 and was active in the Theater Department while attending Friends University.

Dave, as his nearest and dearest called him, was an Eagle Scout who would go on to use those life skills later in his big, amazing life. As a Conscious Objector during the Vietnam War, Dave served the country in a non-combat role.

In 1968, Dave moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to attend the Fleisher Art Memorial School of The Philadelphia Museum of Art and won its annual Best Artist of The Year Award in both 1969 and 1970. In 1973, Dave became an Artist-In-Residence at the Ivy League's University of Pennsylvania. During his time in Philadelphia, he also taught in the Philadelphia Quaker Schools including Penn Charter Academy, the second oldest prep school in the country, founded by William Penn in 1689.

Dave returned to Wichita in 1991 and taught as an Adjunct Professor of Art History at Wichita State University and Friends University. Dave was a prominent member of the Wichita Arts scene. He used his photography skills to capture many important cultural events including the Tallgrass Film Festival, The Wichita River Festival and the Wichita North End Urban Arts Festival.

Dave's art was featured in many prominent shows and galleries around the country over his 55-year career. A large part of Dave's life's work is held in the archives at Wichita State University and Washburn University.

He is survived by his brother Ed Quick, nephews Andy Quick and Steve Quick, niece Vanessa Quick, his former wife Jennifer Quick, his beloved cats, "The Fabulous Twister Twins" (Little Lucky and Frankie Blue Eyes), a large "chosen family" and many dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents.

Services are planned and will be announced at a later date by Affordable Cremations Plus, Wichita, Ks.

Grew up with the Quicks as neighbors until they moved to Riverside; and then spent many Fridays playing games and just horsing around while our parents played Canasta. He and his brother Ed were forever friends with my mother after my dad and his mother died. I think Dave still lived in the little house on Coolidge.

Dave was a good friend and the most important teacher I ever had. I first met him when I took his Beat Culture class at WSU in 2000. I was already really into the Beat Generation, and over the course of his class, we became friends. He was a very important teacher who transformed my understanding of art. Dave never gave me any instruction with any type of art. What he taught me was more important. He taught me how to be an artist.

Dave had been a special part of our family, sharing the families joys and pains , throughout most of my life he was there. I can still recall sitting in his living room crowded with books, paintings, listening to music and talking about everything from his days with Lou Reed, Andy Warhol, Black Bear Bosin, and many others. He was always there for me and my family and I will miss him very much.

I asked Dave to speak to one of my classes at Friends U. He spoke on the Harlem Renaissance with an abundance of anecdotes and dozens of fascinating images on his PowerPoint. I was awed. I thought I knew the subject fairly well but learned so much listening to him. Later I saw an exhibitition of his photography of Wichita. He was so warm and caring and proud as he introduced me to his brother. I am shocked to read of his passing and his death depletes the world.

As an educator in the Wichita Public Schools I had to renew my teaching certificate on a regular basis. Even though I was an art major as an undergraduate, I did my graduate work in counseling and administration, becoming a building level administrator in USD 259. However as I started to take classes to renew my certificate, I returned to taking art classes. I enrolled in History Of Photography, there I met David. He was an excellent professor and brought history to life. During this time, we became friends and even did a photography show. The show was at the Firehouse Gallery and included work by Dave Quick, Fernando Salazar and myself. I credit Dave for getting me working as a fine art photographer. I sought out his courses at WSU taking a course on the Harlem Renaissance from David. Later my wife Nancy, my son Matthew and I all took a course on the Beat Generation from Dave. Although, after he left WSU and I retired from USD 259, we drifted apart, I continued to see him as an inspiration and a mentor in my art. I will miss Dave and regret that I didn´t call him one more time. He was an important member of the Wichita art community.
