Doris Bettis Obituary

Bettis, Doris Triplett Burrow Pioneering spirit, strong-willed, fiercely independent and profoundly loyal to family and friends to the end, Doris Triplett Burrow Bettis passed into the loving arms of the Lord at her Trophy Club home on August 27, 2017, one day before her 88th birthday. Her four children, husband Dave, and other family members were with her at the time of her death. Doris was a respected teacher, accomplished artist, successful businesswoman and church and community leader. Born in Fort Worth in 1929, she spent her early years in El Paso before attending Texas Woman's University in Denton. She proudly remembered traveling to Denton by airplane as a freshman in 1946. Upon graduating from TWU in l950, she married Bill Burrow and moved to Springlake in the Texas panhandle, eventually settling in Tulia. From there, she moved with her husband, who was in the seed business, and four children to Fargo, ND. The family then moved to Wichita, KS. Doris and Bill moved to Dekalb, IL, then to Trophy Club, marking a return to Texas, a state they both loved. Through the hectic pace of business re-locations, Doris and Bill raised four children, Beverly, Barbara, Billy and Bruce. They remember their mother's strong moral and spiritual core as well as the discipline she brought to home life. They also recall Doris's fun-loving and adventuresome spirit, a quality she retained to the end of her days. Doris taught fourth grade for five years and was co-owner of the iconic business, the Keller Feed Store, a successful family-run business that catered to ranchers, farmers and pet owners at several locations throughout the Fort Worth area. Learning from her mother and then majoring in art in college, Doris mastered art in many forms including oils, sculpture, and acrylics. She renewed her interest after retiring from business and was prolific in different media. Tragically, her husband Bill died suddenly when he was 59, creating a void in her life that was only filled when she married Dr. David Bettis. "Dave", a well-respected optometrist from Wichita, KS, the second love of her life. They had many happy years together in Trophy Club and the surrounding area, where they were active in the St. Laurence Episcopal Church and various art and civic groups. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Charlotte Triplett, and her first husband, Bill Burrow. She is survived by her husband, David Bettis; daughter, Beverly Golden; daughter, Barbara and her husband, John McKee; son, Billy Burrow and his wife, Jan; and son, Robert Bruce Burrow; stepson, Walter Bettis and wife, Julie; stepson, Andrew Bettis and wife, Lori; as well as eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. She will be very much missed by her family and many friends, but there is comfort in knowing she has gone to her eternal home. The family wishes to thank Doris's caregivers for their kindness and professionalism. A memorial service will be held for Doris Triplett Burrow Bettis at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 2, at St. Laurence Episcopal Church, 519 North Kimball Avenue, Southlake, TX 76092. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Laurence Church or the charity of your choice.
