Helen Hornberger Obituary

Helen Hornberger

May 20, 1925 - March 26, 2024

Wichita, Kansas - Helen Johnson Hornberger was born May 20, 1925, in McPherson, Kansas. She graduated from McPherson High School and followed her brothers to Wichita. She then worked at Beech Aircraft Company, eventually becoming personal secretary to Olive Ann Beech where she met her husband, Dwight C. Hornberger.

She married Dwight in February of 1949 and the couple had three children, Susan, Jan, and Mark.

In the early 60s, she developed the art of creating beautiful, realistic flowers out of metal. By the end of the decade, she was becoming well known for her work. She began lecturing and teaching others her techniques, ultimately authoring a book entitled "The Art of Making Tole Flowers and Ornaments." She has bouquets of the fifty state flowers at the Smithsonian and the Sedgwick County Historical Museum.

Helen was an active member of PEO, a docent at the Wichita Art Museum and Botanica, and an active volunteer with many Wichita organizations. She received the Auxiliary Achievement Award for more than fifty years and thousands of hours of volunteer service with Wesley Hospital.

Helen passed away March 26, 2024, in Wichita, Kansas. Her husband, Dwight and her son, Mark predeceased her. She is survived by her daughters, Susan Hornberger of Wichita and Jan Hornberger Duffy of San Francisco, California. A celebration of life service will be held at College Hill United Methodist Church at 1:30 PM on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.
