Kim Setty Obituary

From KWCH.com:

KWCH anchor Kim Setty died Wednesday night. Kim shared 24 years with the people who work at KWCH and those who watched her on air. In that time, she balanced dedication to her job and devotion to her family; she balanced the gravity, and comedy, of working in the news business; and, while battling breast cancer in the public eye, she balanced fighting for her life and keeping normalcy in her family's life.

Kim started at KWCH in May 1987 as a bureau reporter in her hometown of Hutchinson. By the next year, she'd moved up the ranks to become anchor and producer of Eyewitness News at Noon, a newscast that earned high ratings under her command. Before working at KWCH, Kim reported for WIBW TV in Topeka. She began her broadcasting career on the radio, which helped Kim work her way through college at the University of Kansas.

Kim's reporting career ranged from working the medical beat and analyzing elections, to covering Hutchinson's natural gas explosions and interviewing First Lady Barbara Bush. She's best known for her series of consumer stories called, Does It Work? Trying to help viewers not waste money, she searched for products with hard-to-believe claims and recruited everyday people to test them. She concluded each story by asking testers for a verdict with her familiar question, "does it work?" Kim's homemaker sensibility and hearty sense of humor made her reports informative and entertaining. Over the course of a decade, Does It Work? became a popular series viewers looked forward to on Wednesday nights.

The Kansas Association of Broadcasters recognized Kim with accolades for Does It Work? as well as the Noon newscast she anchored. She also won awards for reporting on homeless children in Kansas and a story about Girl Scouts visiting their incarcerated mothers. In 2011, Kim received recognition by Goodwill Industries of Kansas for her service to the organization. She also volunteered at church, her children's schools, Girl Scouts and cancer support groups.

In 2005, Kim told viewers she'd been diagnosed with breast cancer. Through sickness and losing her blonde hair, she worked as much as possible. After recovering from surgery and treatment, she returned to anchoring as a redhead. Five years later, Kim let viewers know she was battling cancer once again. Through more surgeries, radiation and chemotherapy, she worked as much as she could. She insisted on coming to work until doctors told her she must stop, in the summer of 2011.

While Kim was a star on the Kansas airwaves, her two children and husband were the stars in her life. She mastered a balance of personal and professional life that's difficult when working in television news. In the newsroom, Kim loved to have a good laugh and she knew when to be all business. Because of the example she set, KWCH management created a Kim Setty Spirit of Excellence Award to recognize outstanding employees like her.

Colleagues at KWCH remember Kim for her diligence on the job, determination and dignity through cancer, and her down-to-earth and light-hearted character. We are grateful she shared 24 years with us.

My nephew and kims son are in the same class at school. My mother Antoinette "Ciccone"Cohorn was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2008, by 2009 she was losing her battle and all my nephews classmates parents including Kim Setty prepared meals and offered much support for our family. It's upsets me to hear of her death. She was a beautiful, wonderful, loving, and caring human being. Kim and her family are in my prayers. More people should try to follow in her footsteps, this world would be a much better place.

I had the pleasure of being interviewd by Kim many times over the past two decades, whenever Music Theatre of Wichita was featured on the KWCH news. She was unfailingly fun, gracious, intelligent, and as good as listener as she was a questioner. I always felt she was a person of real quality and genuineness. The last visit I had with her was last summer, and I noticed she had great difficulty getting up to the small platform where the interview chairs were located, but once she sat down next to me she was just as radiant and engaged as ever. Our community has lost a gracious and uniquely capable lady. My heart goes out to all her family. Thanks so much for sharing her with us all these years!

January 6, 2012

I had the pleasure of working with Kim through her illness. I can saw that no matter what news she had from her dr.'s she always had a smile on her face. Her children were the light in her life and I believe her love for them is what kept her going with such strength and courage. Each time she spoke of them her smile went from cheek to cheek with such excitment. My time with Kim touched my heart, she made me realize that your life is what you make it.My time spent with her will always remain. My prayers go out to her loved ones.

Away from working with her, she was a wonderful person who many in the community liked extremely well. She will dearly be missed. May God rest her soul in Heaven.

Our deepest symathy goes out today to Kim's family. Though I never had the pleasure of meeting Kim myself, my husband did, while visiting with her several times during his years with Sedwick County Fire Department . Being a native of Wichita myself and a long time KWCH viewer, I feel as though I did know Kim. She has always been one of my favorite news anchors, as she seemed so personable and caring. I remember the day she first announced to her viewers of her diagnosis of cancer. I remember thinking to myself as I watched her over the next several years, that if I ever had to walk through that valley, that I would be able to do so with the same courage, grace and strength that Kim always did. Our prayers go out today, not only to her immediate family, but also to her KWCH family. Kim Setty will always be remembered as a very special part of our community. May God carry you through this time of sadness and may you always take comfort in your many wonderful memories you shared together.

In God's Love,

Kim was a patient of mine. Her courage, grace and love for all around her always amazed me. She truly was a gift to all that knew her. My heart was saddened to hear that she lost her battle to cancer. Having met her..I can truly say she was as real in person as she was on TV. Her smile was so special. She fought hard because she loved her family so very much she never wanted to leave them. Trust me when I say...she is still with you; forever watching over you and sending you her love. I hope all the beautiful memories that your family created together will bring smiles to your heart.

I am so sorry for your loss, but can tell you that she fought hard for all of you. I can tell you that she was probably ready to go, but was sad to leave you all here. As a mother and wife, I am sure that it scared her to think of you all coping without her. You have all faced adversity through her battle and you know now where your strength comes from.
