Paul Scheer Obituary

Paul Scheer
August 23, 1932 - September 1, 2022
Wichita, Kansas - Paul Scheer, 90, passed away September 1, 2022 in Wichita. He was born in Goddard to Mike and Laura (Albers) Scheer. He graduated from and played basketball for St. Mary's High School in Wichita where, in his senior year, they won the City Championship beating North High. He was named to the Kansas All Star basketball squad that same year and from there received several offers to play college basketball. He accepted a full scholarship to attend Wichita University and was part of the 1954 Shocker team that went 27-4 and played in the NIT. But it was a game winning shot in Stillwater, Oklahoma that permanently established him in Shocker lore and he was always grateful to the Eagle sportswriters for keeping it alive. In Paul Suellentrop's article 'Big shots are part of WSU folklore' he wrote, "Paul Scheer's buzzer beater at Oklahoma State in 1954 launched the Shockers into big-time basketball. Scheer made a 22-footer to give the Shockers a 67-66 win in Stillwater, a victory that helped establish a national reputation and land a bid to the NIT." After college and service in the US Air Force, he went on to a long career teaching physical education and coaching basketball in high school and junior high school. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Ed and Earl, and sister Alda. He is survived by his brother Howard, daughter Lisa, son Ken, and many special nieces and nephews. He was a wonderful father and will be dearly missed. At his request, there will be no services.

Tom Messano

October 10, 2023

My name is Tom Messano and I attended Orangeview Junior High School in Anaheim CA from 1974-1977 (it was 7th, 8th, and 9th grades back then). Coach Scheer was my Physical Education teacher all 3 years. I was also honored and proud that he selected me to serve as scorekeeper and statistician for his 9th grade boys basketball team in 1976-77. I tried out for that team but there were too many better players.
Throughout my 3 years I always looked forward to P.E. as Coach Scheer was always engaging and fair. Those years can be tough for young teenagers, particularly one that was as socially awkward as me, and Coach Scheer helped get me through it. He was part of the California Public Education system when it was one of the best in the country. His reputation in the Anaheim Union High School District where he worked was sterling.
I came across Coach Scheer's passing by chance because I googled his name. The fact that he was in my thoughts 46 years after my last class with him should tell you how much of an impact he had on me.
Rest in peace Coach.

Paul Scheer is the only BIG TIME SPORTS figure I ever met and kind of knew, through the Heaston Family, and being around sometimes when Paul was at their home. He was always so kind, and he knew my name!! Many years later at his Mother-in-Law's service, Paul spotted me and came over and introduced himself to my Mother and me, and I was once again so thrilled that he remembered my name. Luke and I are so sorry for this loss to the Family. Sincere love to all of you.
