Thomas Leslie Page

Thomas Page Obituary

Page, Thomas Leslie, died on August 4, 2013, after a long illness. Tom was a fourth generation Kansan, born in Wichita on September 28, 1937 to Thomas Frederick Page and Mary Lucille O'Hara (both deceased). Tom grew up traveling North and South America in a military family. He lived longest in Wichita, but spent his last years in Manhattan, Kansas. Tom held political science degrees from Wichita State University and Vanderbilt University, as well as an MFA in creative writing from WSU. After his first degree from WSU, Tom's career began in the US Army Intelligence and Security Branch (Missile Command). Following an honorable discharge, he taught political science at the University of Florida, was influential in the creation of a multidisciplinary Latin American Data Bank, and was an organizer with the American Federation of Teachers (AFL-CIO) and the Veterans for Peace. During this time he met his lifelong partner, Leslie Ellen Fox (Page). The two married and had three children, Thomas O. Page (Wichita), Katie Kingery-Page (Manhattan), and Will A. Page (of Brooklyn, New York), to whom he was a dedicated mentor and inspiration. Tom devoted the latter half of his life to creating a large body of poetry, published internationally. In the 1970s he was a founding member of the Forum, a non-profit art and culture collective. He was a thoughtful man of many accomplishments: teacher, activist, labor historian, scholar of Midwestern literature, and poet; he was most proud of his children. Tom is survived by his wife and children; daughters through marriage, Jill Miller and Seher Khawaja; son through marriage, Lindsay Smith; granddaughters, Iris and Ruby; cousins, Francene Sharp and Marsha Brent (Wichita), Richard Wells (Andover), and Robert Page (Topeka); and loyal friends. The memorial celebration will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013, 5 p.m. at Watermark Books, 4701 East Douglas Ave., Wichita, Kansas.

I knew Tom quite well. I was his assistant at the Latin American Data Bank (University of Florida), his creation and baby. In 1972-3, he took me in, a starving Ph.D. student, in his home. An extremely talented poet, he was an all-American in the very best sense of the word. My love to Leslie and family. You had the very best of destines to have Tom and husband and father. A true mentor in everything he said and every one he touched.

I don´t know the who, what, where or why I should receive today an email of Tom Page´s obituary a decade after he died, but I am glad for the cosmos allowing me to think of Tom whom I lost contact in the Nineties before the advent of the Internet. I´ve missed his after-midnight calls that would last an hour or two. Usually, two.
Tom and I were both MFA candidates at Wichita State and we were unlike our other fellow candidates since we were older and built lives outside of academia. What we shared was a drive to write poetry. When it came to poetry, Tom took Imagism from the Station in the Metro, sharpened his imagery, made imagism his own and brought it to Kansas. He was a man of integrity and his integrity found its voice in his poetry.
I wish I never lost contact with him, but such is life. I have a belief that some scholar will discover Tom´s writing and raise it from obscurity to prominence like Dickenson, Whitman and Melville were.
Even at this late date, my condolences and best wishes to his family. You all had an extraordinary man in your lives.

Tom was a friend of mine for a long time. He would call or come by to discuss the world and its many problems. We first met at the organizational meeting for a camp of the Sons of Union Veterans of the US Civil War. I believe he kept up his membership until the end. He was proud of his ancestors. My life was richer for having met Tom.

I didn't know Tom very well, but he was a nice and decent person, willing to help others. Rest in Peace Tom.

Learning of his death, I reread Tom's ERA VET chapbook he sent me years ago. It was good to hear his voice again. He always had a strong Midwest Plains voice, non-sentimental voice that embraced his Kansas roots and addressed issues straight forwardly without compromise. His concern for working people and the oppressed was more built on compassion rather than ideology. I will miss most his friendship.

Tom was always welcoming and gracious. And he was passionate about politics. But even if you may have occasionally disagreed with him, he would never turn and walk the other way. Instead, he would look at you and ask, "Want another beer?" More than that, though, he loved writing and could be trusted for an honest critique of something new you were working on. I shall always remember him.

What a good and great man Tom Page was. His influence will last forever, through his family and those of us who knew him. He introduced me to the peace movement here and was one of the best poets I've even known. Pat and I will miss him.

Tom was my classmate and landlord. He showed me considerable friendship during my time in Wichita, and I'll miss him.
