Albert Lockhart Obituary

April 20, 1919 - February 21, 2007 Albert R. Lockhart, Jr. passed away at the age of 87 in his home in Lenexa, Kansas, on February 21st after a short battle with cancer. Al was preceded in death by his first wife, Katholyn, in 1983, whom he married in 1944. He was also preceded by his second wife, Elna, in 2001, whom he married in 1985. He is survived by his wonderful companion and sweetheart, Carol Leavitt; his son David Lockhart and wife Linda; brother William Lockhart, Ph.D. and wife Edrei; brother Jack Lockhart and wife Duane; stepdaughter Nancy Craig and husband Russ; stepgrandson Frank Alexander Hamill, Ph.D.; and step-granddaughter Amy Cruz and husband John, as well as several loving nephews, a niece, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Al served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army Air Corps, earning an Honorable Discharge in 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He enjoyed a distinguished career in advertising, most notably with Western Auto Supply Company and Bruce B. Brewer & Company, both of Kansas City, Mo. He worked as a freelance copywriter for many years after leaving Brewer Advertising and produced newsletters for Kings Avionics facilities in Gardner and Salt Lake City until shortly before his death. He was also an active member of Ye Anciente and Secret Order of Quiet Birdmen. Al was an accomplished aerobatic pilot who earned commercial, multi-engine, and instrument flight ratings and was a master of the V-tail Beechcraft Bonanza, an aircraft which proved too much for many lesser pilots. Al and David shared a love of Indy car racing, and they attended many Indianapolis 500's together. Above all, Al will be remembered for his quick wit, wry sense of humor, and as a loving husband, companion, and father. A true and honest gentleman, he will be greatly missed by a great many. Memorial services will be held at The Amos Family Chapel of Shawnee, 10901 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, Kan., at 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 25. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Kansas City Hospice, 9221 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64114 for their wonderful and timely support. Dave, now I know where your adventurous side comes from. Your Dad was quite an accomplished lover of life. Prayers with you and yours,

Dear Dave,

I am so sorry to hear about your Dad. I don't know whether you remember me, but I was a part of the Shawnee Mission Northwest High Schoool Library Group.

Besides the name of Al, our Dads had a lot in common. They both worked for Western Auto and were both Staff Sergeants in WWII and discharged in 1945. (My Dad is currently writing a book about his WWII experiences. He was sad to hear about your Dad...My Dad worked in Western Auto's Pricing Department.)

We have sure missed YOU at the Northwest High School '73 class reunions over the years...Someone always asks, "Has anyone heard from Dave Lockhart?"

In your Dad's notice, I read that you went to the Indy 500. Since I live in Indiana, the Indy 500 is a big deal here. My daughter's college is just a mile from the track, so she hears lots of engines, especially during finals week/time trials.

Your Dad certainly led an exciting life, I know you will miss him a lot...I remember even in High School, you talked about him a lot...

Again, I am so sorry to hear about your loss...

Take care,

Don Reddy

Al was a good friend and a and a good customer he was always fair, generous and loyal in his dealings with me. He was smart and wise, a combination you don't see much anymore. The world needs more people with his qualities and integrity. I will miss him.
