Carl Winchell Obituary

Carl P. "Pote" Winchell, 82, of Kansas City, KS, died Monday, November 4, 2002, at Providence Place. Memorial service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 6th at the Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave., Kansas City, KS 66102. Cremation with burial in Highland Park Cemetery. The family requests no flowers. Mr. Winchell was born December 18, 1919, in Kansas City, KS, where he was a lifelong resident of the city. He graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1937. Carl started working at an early age driving a route near Lake Quivira for the Journal Post newspaper. Carl worked at Phillips Refinery during World War II, then started his vocation and calling as an expert glass man. He managed the Harding Glass Co. in Kansas City, KS, for 38 years, retiring in 1981. His hobby was owning and restoring antique automobiles. He was an avid traveler, vacationing in most of the U.S. and three trips to Europe and many trips to Mexico and Canada. He was a former member of Stephen's Methodist Church, and was a member of the Kaw Valley Riders and various Masonic groups. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Lottie & Carl Winchell Sr. and older brother, George Winchell. Carl is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Winchell, daughter, Carol Sue Winchell, and son, Kent A. Winchell, his wife Martha and family, granddaughter, Stacie Norris and family, special greatgrandson, Jess Ford, two sisters, Rose and Louise, and numerous nephews and nieces.
