Doris Box Obituary

Doris E. Box (Smith), born January 25, 1926, passed away peacefully at home on March 6, 2007, surrounded by her family. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 10, at Park Lawn Funeral Home; burial in Green Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday, March 9, from 68 p.m., with rosary being said at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Box Sr.; her parents, Clarence and Dora Smith; three brothers, Clarence "Buddy" Smith, Donald E. Smith, Steven Smith; two sisters, Vera Ault and Sammy Brown, and one grandson, Michael Box. Doris is survived by her children, Beverly A. Toia and husband Joseph M. Sr., Donald E. Box Jr. and wife Phyllis, Kevin N. Box and wife Janice, Christina E. Wheat and Brian L. Box, all of Kansas City, Mo. She is also survived by lifelong friend, Mrs. Lenore (Nonie) Leach and children of Cincinnati, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mom was a proud grandmother to Paul S. Box, D.J. Box (and mother Linda L. Box), Amanda C. Box, Nicholas G. Box, Natalie A. Box, Ryan C. Wheat, Spencer A. Wheat, Meghan E. Wheat, Joseph M. Toia Jr., Nicholas J. Toia, Michele R. Wright and Christina Box, and first great grandchild Mason M. Wright. For over 50 years, Mom's house on 6th Street became the staging area for any and all family events. It became a living gallery of her paintings, photographs and homemade quilts. Laughter and love were the home's main decorative theme. Hard times were dealt with and good times were created. No kid ever had a better mom or grandma. No friend knew anyone more trusting or dear.

Well mom, it's been one year today since your physical presence left us. I can speak for everyone in the family I know by saying there is not a day that passes we don't miss you, love you and yearn for you. We know you are watching over us. It's been quite the year, Mason is getting so big, Mason and Riley are so darn cute, and Michele is bringing home another lil boy in June. Our family continues to grow, as we continue to know you are watching. I know that all 5 of your children and all of the grandchildren are thinking of you today and every day. Miss you and love you Mom.

It has been 10 months since I went to Kansas Eity to see my very best friend on her way to heaven. If any one has ever earned her way to heaven, it is Doris. Doris was the sister I never had. I still want to go to the phone and tell her what is going crazy in my family. I feel like I lost my right arm. Will this pain ever go away. I have talked about myself instead of Doris, because I am lost without her. Every person in the world should have a friend like Doris. If so, the world would be a much better place. I am sure that in heaven if you look in the dictionary for good friend, there has to be a picture of Doris. She gave such joy to me and my family.

My entire life has revolved around getting ready for, recuperating from, or longing to make the trips to Kansas City to be with Aunt Doris and the entire family. Every milestone in my life has included a call or a trip to visit and share either the good news or share the sorrow and get support from Aunt Doris. Life will certainly not be the same without her but I am so very blessed to have had her and her love for so many years. She and my mother have truly shown our families the true meaning of friendship. I only hope that we their offspring can carry on in their example. I love you Aunt Doris and I love you Bev, Donnie, Kevin, Janice, Chris and Brian.

I don't ever remember my life without Doris. She and my grandma were best friends since before I was born. She would come down to my grandmas all the time, I always remember her coming to pick up my grandma in her little car to go to work at the Brookridge Country Club. She will be missed, but she is in a better place, she is in peace.

I knew Doris for only a short time, but every day you spent with her was pure joy. I wish I had had the chance to tell her goodbye, but I know she was surrounded by love. Doris was delighted in life by the simple things... a beautiful flower... a farm scene... or a frisky puppy at play. Often Doris painted these things. I am honored to have known her and will treasure every thing she was. As with all people, I only wish I had had more time...

The foundest memories would be taking long walks with her and my grandma around northeast from 6th Street usually all the way down to gladstone on van brunt and then the long way back...she was always welcome at my grandmas(Dorothy & Joe Cutrera) house whatever time of day it would be, and in that sense to me made her family..never knew her in depth like they did but I was around her ever since i was born and to me that symbolizes family. I know she will be deeply missed but at least she went in peace and is now by God's side staring down on all of you smiling. Hope everybody stays strong and keeps well.

Mom, finally you are at peace and no longer in the agony you have endured these past few years. You will never know the number of hearts you touched and the number of people who love you and will miss you so very much. The grandkids have always thought you immortal, and to all of us you are. You have always been my hero, my best friend and the one I wanted the most to be like. Thank you for being who you were in life and who you are in our hearts. I love you and will miss my "Doris Duty". Rest in peace, and continue to watch over us, as I know you will.

Grandma Box was a very loved person and will be missed. Though extended family may grow apart through the years, Grandma Box and the family will always be apart of my Family. Love to you all in this time.

Dear family,
I've really enjoyed having the blessing of working with your mother and you, and thank you for allowing me to be a part of your lives. My heart goes out to you all as your mother was truly an awesome person. But we must also attempt to be happy for her as she is no longer in any pain. She is walking in the watchful, caring eyes of Jesus Christ. May She Rest In Peace always. Doris I will never forget the love you've bestowed upon me and my family. You'll be missed dearly, Mary & Family.

May the stars carry your sadness away,
May the flowers fill your heart with beauty,
May hope forever wipe away your tears,
And, above all, may silence make you strong.

Here was a woman who defined the word, "Mom!" I deem it an honor to have known Doris; and along with her extended family, I shall forever miss her and her wit and words of wisdom. My deepest and most sincere condolences to all her family and all who knew and loved her.
