To all the Nelson family,
I am so sorry to hear of your dad's passing, especially so soon after the loss of your mom. It is hard enough to bear the loss of one. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. I pray you know that they are in a much better place and will hold all the memories close to your heart. Take comfort in knowing that all will be reunited some day. I am sure both are watching over you. If you need anything, please let us know.

Coach Nelson was always encouraging to me in our PE classes and I thought highly of him and his sense of humor. I ran into him a few years after I graduated from Park when he was scouting a basketball game in Joplin. He remembered me and we reminisced about Park from 60 - 64. He was a very good man.

After reading all of the entries about Coach Nelson, I feel sorry that I never met him. He must have been a very special person. He left behind a wonderful son. I'm so sorry Brad. I know you will miss him. My heart goes out to you.

Dear Nelson family,

I am so sorry for the losses you have experienced this past year. Your mother was a kind, sweet and lovely lady. And, your father was the perfect compliment. I feel blessed to have had him as a teacher at Park Hill (84 grad). He taught me to enjoy the foundations of math which made it easy for me to go on to higher learning math principles. I remember trying to be lazy about difficult problems. He had the ability to not tolerate laziness in a student and helped the student realize and achieve their abilities. He had a true gift for telling you exactly what he thought, and even if you didn't like what he was saying - you still liked him! I enjoyed seeing him after high school when he would visit my parent's home. I credit him with getting my mother and me into "walking" as an exercise routine and looked forward to his latest tomato secrets. I was honored to have him attend my wedding and wish you heartfelt sympathies as you go through this difficult time.

Ed Nelson was one of the finest people I have ever met. In 1979, I was hired to replace another coach at the high school. Ed made it a point to come to me and shake my hand, welcome me to the high school coaching staff, and added that he would be happy to help me in whatever I needed. Over the years, I fell out of touch with Ed, but I will never forget his friendship. He taught me more than he will ever know about coaching. He was a great mentor for me. Thank you, Ed, for making me a better person and a better coach - you will be missed.

Brad, Greg and Sheri,
I very seldom open my home e-mail since I use the laptop from the school I teach. When I did Sunday morning I discovered the devastating news of your father. Please accept my sincere regrets. I do want you all to know how much Ed meant to so many of us. Of course, I got to know your dad at Park College and then worked with him at PHHS. Each of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. May God continue to Bless your families in this time of sorrow.

Sincerely,
Doug Earnhart

I first met Coach in the spring of 1966. He had come to Springfield to meet with me and my parents and to tell me about the basketball opportunities at Park College. My first and lasting impression of Coach was one of an honest and caring individual. I had the honor of playing for him from 1966-1970. We shared many victories and our share of losses, but he taught me more about life than just keeping score. I can still remember him stamping his right foot, and pointing that right finger at me while his eyes showed he truly believed in me. Coach Nelson demonstrated compassion and his love of life, two lessons that he taught me that I keep alive everday in my medical practice.

Coach Ed Nelson was a true inspiration in my life and the lives of all he touched. Thanks Coach.

Coach Nelson was always a man of integrity and dedicated to instruct not only the mind and body of his students, but their entire being. As a Pastor, I will have my entire congregation pray for his family during this time of lost. His tremendous legacy lives on!

My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Nelson's family. Ed was a true people person who was able to bring together differing generations during the Vietnam war era. He bent over backwards to support physical education activities for mentally challenged children as part of the secondary education program and devoted a lot of his personal time and attention to seeing that they were successful. A true loss for the Park community.

Ed Nelson was my first boss when I stated as a young coach track and cross-country at Park College in 1976. Many a time, his experience and sage wisdom were a helpful counter balance to such a rascal. As noted in the many guest book entries, he passes from this world having made an impact on so many lives around him.

Brad, Greg & Sheri,
Bill and I just heard of your father's death. You have our sincerest sympathy. Bill and Ed loved talking about their Navy days and flying and we certainly had lots of talks about math and the goings on at Park Hill. Ed was a true gentleman and man of honor. It was my fortune to have been his friend.

Anyone fortunate to have known Coach Nelson, to have been taught by him, shared a laugh, or received an inspiring word of advice, will agree it was a memorable and blessed experience. Coach Nelson had an equally supportive and mentoring impact on those of us, his female students, as the males he coached. Please accept my sincere condolences for your loss.

Coach Nelson was the teacher and role model everyone aspires to be. He brought me to Park College to play basketball and changed the course of my life in a seamless sequence of small conversations and memorable moments. Coach Nelson introduced April and I, encouraged us in our plans to get married and finish our educations. Playing basketball for him turned out to be a life experience filled with many friendships and fond memories.

I didn't know Coach Nelson, but I have worked with his daughter Sheri for many years in ministry in Branson. Sheri is so great with people and has influenced many young lives for good. Knowing a bit how families pass on attributes, I'm sure that is a testimony to the example he set for his kids. Thank you Coach Nelson for passing on that legacy. Sheri, I pray God's comfort and peace for you and your family as you say goodbye to your dad.

He made an indelable mark on me and all those with whom he came into contact. God bless his family as they say goodbye to him.

To the Nelson Kids,

Through the years I've learned that the true measure of a person's life is based on the number of people they've helped in life. Coach Nelson helped so many people in his years on earth. I'm blessed to have had three role models that shaped my life, my father, Mr. Joseph Steele and Mr. Edward Nelson. Were it not for Coach I have no idea what I'd be doing today. To God Be the Glory.

Ed was my walking buddy for a number of year and since moving from Kansas City I have missed his humor and friendship. His dry wit and his observations of life lifted the spirits of all who came in contact with him. He was a sports figure of reknown and a man of sterling character. I loved him.

Coach and I had talks and plans to start a wrestling team and many other subjects. He was a real mentor to many. I'm sure there will be fond thoughts from those lives he toughed.

Ed and I were friends and colleagues at Park Hill High School. We always had fun/productive visits and enjoyed a few trips to Omaha for the horse races. One of the most fun times I had coaching was the year Ed and I worked together, coaching PHHS basketball. He was a darn good guy. My best regards to Sherry, Brad, and Greg.

I came to Park College to play basketball for Coach Nelson from 1973-1977. It was the best time in my life and owe it to Coach. He was very influential during my college days and I attribute what I have become which is a very successful executive to him. God Bless you Coach, you were the BEST.

I deeply regret the passing of Coach Nelson, who I played basketball for at Park from 1970-74. I learned more than the sport of basketball from "Coach"! He was an extension of`my Mom & Dad during my college years. I know where he is now, he is still teaching. I was looking forward to seeing him at the recognition program. I have nothing but fond memories and I am grateful to have known him. What a great guy!! My prayers to his three children at what I am sure is a most difficult time!!

I remember Coach Nelson vividly from my school days at Park College (1967-1971). He had the ability to make required Physical Education classes fun and entertaining and will always be one of Park's legendary personalities.

After his retirement, Park Alumni always asked about him and Ed attended many Alumni reunions, relating memories and remembering names of former students he had not seen for years.

Coach Nelson was a delightful man and will be missed. My deepest sympathy to his family.

Ed was an outstanding member of the Park College (University) staff. He was not only a great coach but went beyond the call in helping with extra curricular events with the students. I have many fond memories from the late 1960's of him assisting both athletic and non- athletic events on the soccer field and in the field house.
