Helen, Brandon and Monica,
A common theme: Gary was a good and decent man. I could always count on him for 3 things. 1-a good labor relations debate, actually asking him for his guidance then persuading him to do it my way; 2-a good talk about our families and his Scouts; and 3 - encouragement when it got a little tough.
My prayer for your family that you find comfort knowing how much he was loved and respected. May the sorrow felt today be replaced by fond memories in the days to come. May God bless you.
He was a good friend and will be truly missed.

Cecil...I met Gary through my brother when they were "Smokies" together. I later learned that he was your brother, and from then on, I saw him as a bigger and younger version of yourself.
I can only imagine what it feels like to lose a brother, because I still have mine; my best playmate ever; my partner in "crime;" someone I could ALWAYS count on in a crunch, despite his knowledge of my many faults; and someone who has ALWAYS made me proud to be his BROTHER.
My best guess is that you and Gary were proud of each other, and that BOTH of you have made your parents and other familiy members proud of the men that y'all turned out to be.
Peace unto you, Cecil, The Court-room Wizard!

How do you honor a man who shared so much of himself with the world. I first met Gary working in scouts and we worked together for almost 10 years in scouting before we realized we both worked at the IRS. I watched Gary many times with the boys and young men that he worked with in scouting and saw the influence and the love he had for them. He taught them to respect others and how to respect themselves. He set the bar high for them and they never failed him. Gary didn't give up on them and because of his humor, desire to form men of stature, his love, and his tenacity, Kansas City and the world is a better place. Many of these you men honor Gary by the lives that they lead and the talents they share with us all. Walking the hallway at work has been difficult. I keep waiting for Gary to be there to get a hug. After the loss of my husband, those hugs meant so much to me. Through scouting Gary came to know all of my family including my sister the Camp Naish "cook". We will all miss him dearly and I hope that you and Terry are swapping scout stories together. To the Williams family, I offer you my prayers and the wish for God's loving arms to hold you through this time. Gary may God hold you in the palm of his hand until we meet again.

Mrs. Williams and the rest of Mr. Williams family, I would like you all to know that I spoke to this wonderful man everyday before I even knew his name and he was always, always so friendly and warm. I'm honored to have been in the presence of a man that honored his vows to the family he built physically until he couldn't. I have no doubt he will do no less in service to Him in Heaven and continue to cherish you all in spirit. You all are in my most humble thoughts and prayers.

Dear Helen, Brandon, Monica,
I am so sorry for your loss . He loved you all so much, and I can't imagine how difficult it is to lose someone so vital and beloved. The phrase "he never met a stranger" fit Gary more than anyone else I have ever known. And like the Bible story, I am sure he entertained angels unaware: he was always willing to help anyone who asked, or seemed to need it. Reading all the comments of coworkers at IRS, I can only say that he obviously never changed his wonderful ways! When I was a newbie in Labor Relations at GM he was my team leader, mentor, friend, confidant, advisor, morale booster, cheerleader and shoulder to cry on. And he could laugh and find humor in situations where I would have lost my temper completely. When one of the other Labor Reps lost it, Gary would tell us it didn't matter and crack some kind of joke that made it seem like it truly didn't .

The twinkle in his eyes, the mischievous smile on his face, and the voice and laugh that let you know he was enjoying himself. We will never forget the PT District camporees where he would get Scouts, and Scouters too, singing and dancing while waiting in line for pancakes and sausage at breakfast; and that his Scouts and Ed knew he "just" had to have that first cup of coffee in the morning. Jackie and I will miss the paper bag full of coins that contained the registration fees for "his scouts". Gary, keep those "pennies from heaven" sprinkling down upon us and all fellow Scouts and Scouters. We will miss you! Thank you for all that you have done for Scouting. To Gary's family, we are truly saddened by his death and are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.

To Gary's entire family -- my husband D Glass and I want to extend our condolences on Gary's passing. D worked directly with Gary at the IRS for many years and I interacted with Gary almost daily whether in the Employment office or just walking down the hallway.
