Herbert Ketterman Obituary

Herbert Lasswell Ketterman M.D. died peacefully at his home on October 3, 2002, after a courageous fight against cancer. He was born in Bellville, KS, October 24, 1926. He grew up in small towns in north central Kansas and spent most of his childhood in Summerfield, KS. After his tour of duty in the Army during World War II, Dr. Ketterman attended Kansas University and graduated in 1951. He then attended KU Medical School and graduated in 1955. After an internship at Bethany Hospital in Kansas City, KS, Dr. Ketterman joined Dr. Howard Clark in their practice of family medicine. He earned the respect of his many patients and loved serving families over several generations. In 1966, Dr. Ketterman led the development of the Hickman Mills Clinic and Professional Park at 112th and Grandview Rd. He and his partners were models in learning the medical needs of their community and fulfilling them with excellence. In 1967, Dr. Ketterman and Dr. Clark donated an acreage to Kansas City. It is now, called Clark-Ketterman Field and has served some 30,000 young people, supplying their athletic recreational needs. In 1950, Dr. Ketterman married Grace Horst. Together they completed medical training and served their respective patients with great commitment. They had three children and now have four grandsons. They also brought numerous foster children into their home and raised them as their own. He taught his children to love music, fine art, and literature as well as sports. He collected and enjoyed many beautiful things. His wonderful sense of humor eased the tension of difficult times, especially in the last tedious months of his painful illness. Dr. Ketterman was a member of Hillcrest Covenant Church at 87th and Nall. He was the first church chairman and served in a variety of ways over many years. During his medical school years and beyond, he was an active leader in the Christian Medical Society and served two short missionary terms of service in Central America. Surviving Dr. Ketterman are his wife, Grace; three children and their spouses, Kathy King and Steve Jackson, Lyndon and Lyn Ketterman, Wendy and David Nelhart; and four grandsons, Andrew Simpson and Bryan, Brent, and Braden Nelhart. He is also survived by a sister and her husband, Mary and Eldon Wyatt; a brother and his wife, Romney and Cora Ketterman; a foster daughter and her husband, Karen and Eldon Ingraham; and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation will be at D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel, 8201 Metcalf from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, October 6. The funeral service will be at Hillcrest Covenant Church on Monday at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Highland Evangelical Church Cemetery near Newton, KS. The family requests no flowers, but memorial contributions can be made to Hillcrest Covenant Church to benefit Covenant Bible College/Equador, 8801 Nall, Prairie Village, KS 66207. (Arrangements: D.W. Newcomer's Sons Overland Park Chapel (913) 648-6224)

Grace, I don't take the Star, so I just now found out about Herb's passing. Herb has done more to help me understand my life and tasks than anyone I can think of. I will always have a mental of picture of Herb and you, rakes in hand, trying to reduce the hellishness of my life. I look at the people in the Old Testament. I look at Herb. Nobody is without flaws. God used Herb. He has saved many people. On a small scale I hope to continue some of his work. King David, as you know, caused some distress for God, but he was also the greatest of God's kings. I will always love and think of Herb in that way, as King David dancing for the Lord, and not knowing, at all, that this is what he was doing. Grace, there are a lot of would-be saints out there, and many self-righteous people, but very few of the Real McCoy. It is painful to realize that I will have to go Home before I can again dial up Herb and ask for his counsel. May God pity us all.

Dear Grace,

My condolences to you in the loss of your husband Herb.

I first met your husband when he came on a home visit to see my sick brother. Even tho' Christopher H, Jung had a reaction to the shot of penicillin, he survived and is now a ENT doctor in the Cape Girardeau area.

I met you when you gave a workshop on sexuality at Central Bible Church.

I went to your husband's clinic in Hickman Mills where I saw a colleague of his, Dr. Agee.

Later, my husband and I were in a class of yours at Hillcrest Covenant Church. I learned a lot there.

Thru the trials and tribulations of the next decade, I witnessed your strength, courage, loyalty, which taught me how to survive the murder of my daughter Anastasia (WitbolsFeugen). Knowing that we had the assurance of the prayers of God's people, we could survive anything.

I am now working with families as an Intensive In-Home Specialist from Gillis. Both you and your husband had a definite influence in the work I am doing today.

I want to take this opportunity to thank both you, (and Herb)for your Godly influence in my life, and in the lives of other people.

I can only imagine that Herb is conferring with the Great Physician about all of our health problems and physical needs here on earth. My best wishes to you in this next chapter of your life, and I will remember you and your family in my prayers.

Dear Grace and family,

Herb Ketterman was a big part of my little-girl life -- a doctor I looked FORWARD to visiting. Mom and Dad (Ruth and Maurice Vanderberg) always spoke about Herb with great respect. I will remember him with respect. God bless you -- I know the hardship of losing father and husband. God grows very near at this time. Julie

Dr. Grace and family,

Dr. Herb delivered my two sons, was physician to my whole family, was confidant, supporter and most of all, friend. I lost touch with him and was saddened to establish the contact through his passing. Family practice has lost one who personified the caring family physician of old. He will be sadly missed. My heartfelt condolences.

Dr. Grace and family; I was so sorry to learn of the death of your husband. Please send my condolences to your daughter, Dr. Kathy King, as well. Even though I did not know your husband I knew of his work. It is wonderful to know you have the assurance that he is whole again and in the presence of his Heavenly Father.

I never met Herb, but heard much about him from his wife Grace. How he was loved, and did love. It is my regret that I didn't know him personally, and I send my love and condolences to Grace, Kathy, and the rest of the family

I was very sorry to read of Dr. Herb's death. He was our doctor for many years. Both he and Dr. Grace were very helpful in getting the right treatment for my son. And in the correct treatment, he is a happy well adjusted man today.

Thank you so much for your kindness and help when it was needed.

You will be missed and my family's prayers are with the family in the loss of a husband, father, grandfather and friend.

I will never forget the day my parents took me to see you for the first time. I was 10 yrs. old. From that time on you were the only Dr. that mattered in my life. That was a long time ago. You delivered our daughter, a redhead, you took care of my entire family, parents, siblings,my children,my grandparents. We were moving around yet made Dr. appts. when we came back home just because you were you, a caring considerate Dr. in a world where money was more important than the patient. Thank you for everything you did to make my life healthy and happy, and my families. You will be sorely missed.

I have all of your letters and stories you sent me saved for my grandchildren.
