Herbert Pendleton Obituary

Herbert Willis Pendleton, 85, died peacefully on December 17, 2003, at the Kingswood Health Center in Kansas City, MO. Herb had lived at the health center for the past two years after suffering from strokes and Alzheimer's. A Memorial service was held at Christ Episcopal Church, 91st & Nall, on Saturday, December 20. A private burial will preceded the service. Herb was born in Brooklyn, NY, on March 20, 1918. He was the only child of Ralph and Clara Pendleton. He grew up in Baltimore, MD, and attended the University of Maryland. He was a veteran of World War II. Herb married Dorothy Nesbitt in 1937. They lived many years in Anchorage, KY, where they raised their three sons. Herb was the quintessential handyman in this idyllic town and was very involved with civic and community activities. They moved to Leawood, KS, in 1980 and lived there until moving to Kingswood Manor in 2000. Herb has an unbelievable zest for life. He enjoyed a 55-year-career in sales with the Tappan Stove Company, Champion Paper and in Kansas City the Paper Supply Co. He was an avid tennis player and always had a project going on around the house or yard. Later in life, he became involved in the Church and served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden at Christ Episcopal Church. Herb will be deeply missed. He kept a sweet disposition, smile and twinkle in his eyes to the very end. Herb was preceded in death by his parents and his oldest son, Michael N. Pendleton. He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Dorothy; Michael's wife, Vicki Pendleton, Shawnee Mission, KS, and child, Scott Pendleton of Tampa, FL; son, Steven W. Pendleton and his wife, Marilyn N. Pendleton of Knoxville, TN, and their three children, Stephanie Clancy, Orlando, FL, Reed Pendleton and Bruce E. Pendleton II, Knoxville, TN; son, Bruce E. Pendleton and his wife, Elizabeth T. Pendleton, Mission, Hills, KS, and their four children, Elizabeth N. Pendleton and Bruce E. Pendleton Jr., Chicago, IL, John C. Pendleton and Steven W. Pendleton II, Mission Hills, KS; and three greatgrandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, 5500 W. 91st St., Overland Park, KS 66207, or to the Kingswood Wesley Fund, Kingswood Manor, 10000 Wornall, Kansas City, MO 64114.

Bruce, Liz & Family:

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Herb was a wonderful man, and

always had a smile and joke for everyone. I know he was so proud of

you and your family, and so very grateful for your assistance and help with Michael. You let us all

enjoy and have him for a few years

longer. Herb was truly a gentleman's gentleman, and you truly are following in your Dad's footsteps. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Many of us here at Hamilton Printing in Louisville remember Herb from the Nationwide days. Sorry to hear of his passing and his ordeal with Alzheimer's. We know how debilitating a condition it is.

Sincerely,
