Alexandria, Virginia - Jane Duff Cain, 92, of Crescent City, California and most recently of Brookings, Oregon passed away on the morning of July 9, 2023, tended in her final days by her daughter Constance. Jane was the youngest of four, born on December 11, 1930, to Louis Dunlap Duff, Sr. and Cyra Sweet Duff of Kansas City, Missouri. She graduated from Southwest High School where she was a proud member of the basketball team and swimming club, as well as vice president of both the school choir and literary magazine. Jane graduated from the University of Missouri in Columbia where she was an active participant of Kappa Alpha Theta, the first Greek-letter fraternity for women. This was the beginning of her long-standing commitment to volunteer service, which included stints as President of the Junior League in Princeton, New Jersey in 1970-71 and President of the Women's Club in Crescent City, California in 2015-16. Jane was a successful businesswoman throughout her career, initially as a residential real estate agent in Kansas City and San Diego and then as the founder of Almost Like A Daughter, which provided a wide range of personal services for the elderly and disabled in San Francisco for over a decade. Known for her incisive wit as well as her ability to count, Jane was an avid bridge enthusiast, skilled seamstress, and talented knitter. Her dogs were constant and loyal companions, values she shared and appreciated. Jane had a keen ear and loved to sing and play the piano. She was one of the founding members of the Grace Notes of Greenwich, an a cappella singing group.
Jane was predeceased by her former husband, John Joseph Cain, and her youngest daughter, Cyra Jane Cain, as well as her eldest sister, Sibyl Duff Tilson, and elder brother, Louis Duff. She is survived by her older sister, Cyra Duff Sanborn of Lexington, Massachusetts, her children, Constance (Donnie Evanow) Cain of Crescent City, California, and Douglas Cain of San Francisco, California. Other survivors include her grandson, Nathanael (Laura Baer) Cain and her three great-grandchildren of Bend, Oregon. Jane was beloved by various nieces and nephews scattered about the country, including Athelia Tilson of Watertown, Massachusetts, Sibyl Tilson of Alexandria, Virginia, Patricia Woodbury Miller of Prairie Village, Kansas, Cyra Sweet Dumitru of San Antonio, Texas, Peter Sanborn of Lexington, Massachusetts, and Noel Sanborn of Palo Alto, California. Jane brought color, energy and fun to the lives of those who loved her. She will be greatly missed and remembered with deepest affection.
The family wants to thank the staff of Bright Creek, the memory unit of Sea View Senior Living, for the loving care that Jane received in the last years of her life. In particular, we wish to acknowledge Ruby Howard, Barbara Jimenez, RN, Jordan Landers, and Karen Rickerson for their professionalism, compassion and affection.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to honor Jane's memory may do so by contributing to the Puli Club of America or the dog rescue league in their area. Contributions may also be made to the Brookings Presbyterian Church in Brookings, Oregon.
