Janice Marie Ehly, 74, of Shawnee, Kan., beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away after a 14 year battle with cancer Saturday, December 14, 2013, surrounded by her family. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, in the Wesley Chapel at the United Methodist Church of the Resurrection, 13720 Roe Ave., Leawood, Kan., with funeral services starting at 11 a.m. Jan was born on Oct. 23, 1939, in Bayard, Neb., where she graduated from High School. She attended Doane College in Crete, Neb., as a Business/Music Major. Jan was active in both instrumental and vocal music. Following college and marriage she was employed as Office Manager in Real Estate/Insurance and later as an Executive Secretary for IBM. Jan was a member of the PEO Sisterhood. After moving to Kansas City in 1972, Jan served as Executive Assistant to the President of Bayer Corporation's Animal Health Division in Shawnee. Later she developed Bayer's Telemarketing Division and ultimately became Manager of the Customer Service Department. After 23 years of employment with Bayer, Jan continued to travel widely supporting her husband's guest-conducting appearances. Jan was deeply loved and admired by her family and friends. Her cheerful demeanor and ever- positive attitude toward others will be sorely missed. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Eph Ehly; two children, Christopher (Julie) Ehly and Heidi (Gregg) Zimmerman; and five grandchildren, Hank Ehly, Rae Ehly, Luke Ehly, Max Zimmerman and Lucy Zimmerman. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Kansas City Hospice and Palliative Care or the Resurrection Memorial Fund. Jan had the greatest gift a person can have - she made you want to be a kinder person. Every minute I spent with her at Bayer was a joy. We were going thru a massive business growth spurt and pressure was high but Jan always saw the good in all situations and all people. I remember one evening we were out of town on business and we had about a hour to visit a mall to try and do some holiday shopping. Eph was going to conduct in New York once again and Jan hadn't purchased a dress yet. I talked her into trying on dresses and every dress she tried on was truly beautiful. Looking back I now realize it wasn't the dress it was Jan. She was always beautiful inside and out. I had no doubt Heaven has a new voice in the choir and she is spreading cheer and watching over her family.
