John Beeks Obituary

John Warren Beeks, of Kansas City, passed away on June 22, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Services will be held at the Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, 6401 Wornall Terrace, Kansas City, Missouri at 4 p.m. on Monday, June 28, 2004. Visitation will be from 2:30-4 p.m. in the Jewell Room of the Church prior to services. John was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 5, 1932, the son of Rosa Kornbrodt Beeks and Claude Benson Beeks. He attended Bryant School until 1943, when his family moved to Baldwin City, Kansas to pursue family interests. He attended Kemper Military Academy and Baldwin High School before receiving a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Baker University, where he was a third generation graduate in 1954 and a member of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He received his Doctorate of Medicine in 1965 from the University of Kansas School of Medicine. He was published in the Journal of the Kansas Medical Society with his thesis on cancer research. He practiced family medicine in Olathe, Kansas for ten years before establishing one of the first occupational and environmental medicine practices in Kansas City. He retired from medical practice in 1999 following thirty-three years of medical service in the Kansas City community. Dr. Beeks was a member of Saint Andrew's Episcopal Church, Mission Hills Country Club, past president of the Missouri Society of the Sons of the Revolution 1776 and the National General Surgeon for the General Society of the Sons of the Revolution 1776. He served the medical community through membership in the American Medical Association, past president of the Great Plains College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, the Metropolitan Medical Society, Aerospace Medical Association, American Association of Railway Surgeons, Missouri State Medical Society, Kansas City Southwest Clinical Society, Southern Medical Association and the Royal Society of Medicine, Great Britain. He served as the Senior Aviation Medical Examiner for the Federal Aviation Administration for many years. John served on the Board of Governors of the American Royal, the Mayor's Corp of Progress and as a past member of the Board of Trustees for the Kansas City Rehabilitation Institute and Kansas City Philharmonic Association. He was also a member of the Navy League of the United States, the Ivanhoe Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite, the Ararat Shrine, Kansas City Rotary Club and Rotary International. Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Joan Moherman Beeks of the home; a daughter, Sarah Beeks Higdon and her husband, Don; and granddaughter, Katherine Brooke Higdon.
