Dr. John G. Campbell, 91, of Fairway, KS died on January 25, 2013 at the Kansas City Hospice House. He was born on August 10, 1921, at Rosedale, KS, the son of Frederick and Clela (Gillett) Campbell. He attended school in Kansas City and finished Missouri Military Academy in 1938. He received his MD from the University of Kansas in 1949. John served as a Navy hospital corpsman during WWII in Jackson, MS. After graduating from medical school, he extended his service in the Army and worked as a physician in the Korean War. While stationed in Jackson, John married Winnie Raye Yelverton. They eventually moved to Steelville, MO where John was in General Medical Practice. They had 3 sons, David, Fred, and John Alexander. Later, Dr. Campbell obtained his specialty training in Chicago. He joined his father's practice, which led to his appointment as Head of Proctology at Research Medical Center. John divorced and later met Ruby Bauer. They were married in 1972 and spent 34 years together until Ruby's death. John spent his childhood summers in Burr Oak, KS. In adult life, he enjoyed weekends at his farm, west of Lawrence, KS. He had multiple hobbies and was active in Sertoma Club for several years. After retirement, John volunteered many hours at The Pantry and attended the Village Presbyterian Church. He also enjoyed spending time with his friend, Betty Berger. John was preceded in death by his parents, wives, and two sisters. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM on February 2, 2013 at the Village Presbyterian Church, 6641 Mission Rd, Prairie Village, KS. Reception immediately to follow at the church. I only knew him for the last 15 years of his life. I knew him as a kind and giving man; a very forgiving man.

I am grateful for the life of Mr. Campbell. Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.

In memory of my number one uncle, the hours visiting in Kansas City, the fun at Mission Hills, listening to medical stuff, his easy demeanor, his generous nature. He will be missed.

To my cousins and other family members (as Connie said), I too am saddened by the loss of my Uncle. As children, he and my mother were like two peas in a pod visiting their grandparent's farm in Kansas. It has always been fun to see historic films of them at play. I hope others take comfort as I do that perhaps, along with my Aunt, their youthful spirits are together and at play once again.

At the memorial service, I had some video images of dad when he was a child in the 20's and 30's. Some were taken during a trip to Colorado and other places and might be of interest to other branches of the family. I can provide copies. Facebook me.

I am part of the "Colorado Gillette Clan," [we changed the spelling] his mother Clela, was my grandfather's (Nathan Warner Gillett) sister. I had visited John's family home as a child, and once as it was being renovated for a Parade of Homes in the late 1980s. John was my mother, June's age (d. 2001) and II saw the "Kansas Gilletts" till the last obligatory return to Burr Oak, Kansas for funerals. I remember the whole Campbell family's generosity and kindness. His mother sent my mother (when my mother was a young girl on a homestead in Eastern Colorado, and very poor) cans of "Campbell's Tomato Soup" for Christmas, I think my mother thought they owned the company and she has asked for it. I know he will be missed by his friends and family.

John was a cousin to Dewey Gillett. John was a great surgeon. He was pleasant to be around and he was a humble man.

John was so special to us! We always looked forward to his visits to the farm. He loved to hunt so that was a very special time for us! We will certainly miss him! Dan & Sandra Franco

To my cousins and other family members, may God Bless you at this difficult time. I have such fond memories of Uncle John, his wit and humor, but most of all his willingness to accept me as I was. With love, Connie
