John Strick Obituary

John G. Strick, Jr., 88, of Kansas City, Kan., passed away Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at Kansas City Hospice House. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 3, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, on Strawberry Hill, Kansas City, Kan., where visitation will begin after 9 a.m. Entombment with Military Honors will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. John's Church, Cathedral of St. Peter, Sisters, Servants of Mary or Kansas City Hospice House. John was born May 23, 1921, to John H. and Veronica (Kancelarysty) Strick in Kansas City, Kan. He was an active member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, where he had served many years as an usher, as past President of St. John's Catholic Club, and the Parish Council. He was also a member of the Cathedral of St. Peter, where he served as an usher. Other memberships included, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree, Fitzsimmons Chapter; the Serra Club and UNICO. John was a graduate of St. Benedict's Grade School, Wyandotte High School and Kansas State University. He served his country in the Naval Air Corps as a pilot, retiring as a Commander, after 27 years in the Naval Reserves. Cmdr. Strick was a 26-year member of the American Legion, Armourdale Post 188. He had been employed at the Urban Renewal Agency of Kansas City, Kan., as a Project Director and Central Relocation Director; Sales Manager at Fordyce Concrete; General Manager of Stewart Sand and Material Company; Assistant District Traffic and Sales manager for Continental Air Lines; and as a commercial pilot for Trans World Airlines. Mr. Strick served the people of Wyandotte County as a Kansas State Senator from the 4th District for eight years. He owned and operated Wyndot Paper Company for 41 years, from 1968 to the present. Preceding him in death, were two sisters, Rita Switala Kaminski and Veronica Sarras; and two brothers, Anthony and Henry. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elizabeth R. (Macan) of the home; four children, John P. Strick and wife Sherri, Gregory J. Strick and wife Touri, Marion J. Strick and wife Teresa and Mary E. Ponnath and husband Steve; eight grandchildren, Brian, Roxanna, Erin, Michael and Matthew Strick, Shannon Dolrenry, and Geoffrey and Jessica Ponnath; six great-grandchildren, Bennett, Addison and Milam Strick, and Paige, Lauren and Claire Dolrenry.
