Sorglose Jugend - memories of Innsbruck...

I was shocked to read these sad news. Karl has been a close friend for more than 40 years. A great and independent mind, an original thinker who never joined the crowd and never hesitated to be politically incorrect. One of the few who were truly "larger than life size". How much I will miss him. The science opf toxicology will be poorer. I wished I had an e-mail address of his family, so I could send a more personal message...

Dr. Rozman will be remembered by his many years developing voluntary contributions to the Threshold Limit Values (TLV) committee for the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and its sister German MAK commission. Dr. Rozman's work resulted in occupational exposure limits for dozens of toxic chemicals encountered in very diverse working conditions. Karl was an office partner with Dr. John Doull for many years at the KU Medical Center and both Karl and John had many professional colleagues who respected their work. Both Karl and John were direct, honest and rigorous scientists whose contributions are outstanding in the world of medical toxicology.

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Rozman's passing. I enjoyed working with him and getting to know his wife and daughters. There were many things to admire about Dr. Rozman, he was very smart and confident in his convictions. His professional conduct could be a little intimidating because of his intelligence, but his heart was so big. He was very thoughtful and generous, always remembering birthdays and holidays. I worked for him for 5 years. I don't know if many people know this, but I was supposed to stop working for him 6 months prior to my end date because he was retiring. However, when he found out that I didn't start school until January, he kept me on another 6 months so I could have the income and health insurance. It was amazing to see his strong professional side, but if you mentioned his daughters, or especially the grandchildren, his eyes would just beam and a smile would go across his face. As proud as he was of his professional accomplishments, they didn't compare to the pride he felt about his family. I know that he will be missed by many and my heart goes out to all his family.
