Larry Engelkenon Obituary

July 19, 2007, Larry J. Engelken earned the wings his family and friends knew he already had during his brief time with us. Larry earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Kansas State University in Electrical Engineering. He worked for two global engineering designs firms including Black and Veatch in Kansas City. He was a founding member of a local and global firm, Convergent Group and later became a successful self-employed entrepreneur, developer, and philanthropist. His hobbies included traveling, sampling/sharing food and fine wines (the more, the merrier), his Harley and his family. He is survived by his loving wife Holly, his children Amanda, Dustin, Devin, Andrea, Mike, and Lori as well his grandchildren Ashley, Caleb, and Keegan with two more grandkiddos expected any day. He is also survived by his mother, Pat, eleven siblings, and too many other relatives to even count! Larry exuded life and kindness, graciousness and generosity. He was a voracious learner and incredible mentor. He made lifelong friends wherever he went and was larger than life. We know he is now the busiest Angel in Heaven; just try to stop him! He would tell everyone to love and cherish your friends and family every day and never miss an opportunity to spend time together. Also, be sure to TELL them as often as possible, in words, deeds, and the little things, how much they mean to you. As Larry would say, looking directly into your eyes, "Salud". A Celebration of Life will take place at the residence at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, July 24th. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you make a donation in Larry's name to a charity of your choice.

Dear John & Amanda,

It is in times such as these, that we appreciate our family and friends even more. After all, we are just a blink in God's grand scheme of things. We have a little stewardship over the things we think we "own" and then we must pass them on.

We feel it was so providential that you were able to have such fantastic quality time with Larry before he went home. Most people have their father in their lives for decades and yet they are times that are totally devoid of the quality weeks, days and hours you were privileged to enjoy with Larry.

We had a friend the other day, We have him still, though he passed away.
We used to write and call and phone, but now the Lord has called him home.
Now with our thoughts and when we pray, we know he's near every day.
When the wind makes its whispering moan, we know it's Larry's pleasant tone.

God bless you and keep you in His loving hands.

Dearest Amanda & John,
Our deepest sympathies go out to you, Holly, Dustin, Devin, Andrea, Mike, Lori, and Cindy and all of the Engelken clan. In such a time of a tragedy it is a blessing to know that you are all surrounded by such great gifts of love, life, and light: Each Other!! Larry was and is an amazing guy. Sal and I are heartbroken that we will never be able to know him as you did, but will always be able to see his light in you. Above all else, he is in a beautiful place, with fine wine, amazing food, and shining down and through each and everyone one of you.

We love you all so much and you are in our daily thoughts, prayers and blessings.

I remember our time in college at he Phi Kap house and the early days after college when we played touch football together. Larry was always up beat and positive, a wonderful friend. He will be missed by everyone who came in contact with him.

Larry was a great fraternity brother and a great friend. He was directly responsible for our initial meeting and Jeanne and I owe him for the nearly 34 years of happiness that we have shared. A great many of us will miss him.

I am really thankful to have known Larry and what he had brought to my life. Almost always had a smile on his face, and full of spirit. We will miss him around K-state and the frat house.
