Martin O'Laughlin Obituary

Martin Pius O'Laughlin Martin Pius O'Laughlin, M.D., died peacefully on December 22, 2018. Born on May 16, 1955 in Kansas City, Missouri to George and Genevieve O'Laughlin, he graduated from Rockhurst High School and Harvard College, and received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. A pediatric cardiologist, Martin practiced medicine for over 30 years in Houston, Texas, Durham, North Carolina, and Kansas City, Missouri, in addition to teaching all over the world. He loved every minute of his career, a love that was reflected back to him by his many patients and their parents. Martin made a warm impression on everyone he met, not only with his quick wit and infectious smile, but also with his genuine curiosity, compassion, and respect for all people, young and old. In recent years, he enjoyed living in New York City, surrounded by close friends who supported him in the last years of his battle with Parkinson's disease. The family wishes to thank everyone for their love and good wishes during his long illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Jennifer Ruth O'Laughlin, and his daughters Molly and Claire, as well as his siblings and extended family. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by his family and many close friends across the globe. Funeral services will be held at 12:00pm on Saturday, December 29, 2018, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 1001 East 52nd Street, Kansas City, MO 64113. At Martin's request, attendees are invited to wear bright colors to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family would ask friends of Martin to honor his memory by contributing to Make-A-Wish Foundation or NYU's Fresco Institute for Parkinson's & Movement Disorders.

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. My husband was one of his patients 30 years ago. He operated on him in Giessen, Germany. Today we would have liked to have his help.
My husband always speaks of him with the greatest respect

I am so very sorry for your loss. My daughter was a patient of Dr. O' Laughlin at Duke 23 years ago. He saved my child's life and continued to advise us until you left Kansas City. We actually meet in Kansas City about eight years ago where you took us out for lunch. I just found out about Dr. O'Laughlin's passing and I wanted to reach out. He was our hero and one of the most thoughtful people I ever met. He will always have our gratitude. Please know your family is in our thoughts and prayers. We are all blessed for having had him in our lives!

50+ years later, that smile, charisma, kind heartedness and prodigy of academia so bestow the greatness, compassion & humility of my former 1960-69 St. Peters Grade School classmate(SPS)KCMO...."Marty O". So sorry to read of Martin's passing, but OHHH...look at how much better off the world is for his time on this earth. The true measure of any mortal being's benefit to all. God Bless you good friend.

The dedication to his patients was unmatched. I remember standing at many a bedside while Dr. O'Laughlin patiently explained what he was looking at and drew diagrams to explain it in more detail. He will be missed; he was one of a kind.

I am saddened and sorry for your loss of Dr. O'Laughlin. I remember how he was as so willing to teach us, the NICU Nurses who cared for many of his patients.

Marty was a man for others! He was a classmate of mine at Rockhurst. May God grant him peace and let perpetual light shine upon him.

Marty was a crucial component of my Rockhurst education. He and I had many classes together; without him I would not have comprehended Latin. I'd even call him at night for help with Latin homework. Ever the teacher he would make me work at it by giving his answers in Latin!
I never saw Marty again after graduation, but I was aware he was performing brilliantly. I have been forever grateful for those four years at The Rock with him. Marty lived this: Veni, vidi, vici.
