MICHAEL BERNARD WAXMAN

1951 - 2014

Michael Bernard Waxman, 63, passed away unexpectedly at his home in Baldwin City, Kan., on July 16, 2014. Mickey was born in Washington, D.C. on April 29, 1951, to Elaine and Arnold Waxman and spent the next 17 years living on several Navy bases in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico before settling with his family in Overland Park in 1968. After graduating from Shawnee Mission South High School in 1969, he attended the University of Kansas and obtained a Master's Degree in Social Psychology. In between his studies, Mickey enjoyed an adventurous lifestyle. He became a founding member of a commune, worked as a deck hand on a tugboat on many American riverways, and volunteered on Kibbutz Merhavia in Israel. Following his graduate work, he had an extensive career in information technology at the University of Kansas. He was involved in tech support, became the anti-virus guru, and was eventually recognized as a regional expert in statistics programming. Mickey will be sorely missed by the many graduate students who looked to him for assistance with analysis of complicated data. Those who knew Mickey will remember him for his warmth, patience, dry sense of humor, gentle personality, and dedication to his very large family. Mickey was preceded in death by his mother, Elaine Kahn Waxman, in 1984. He is survived by his father and step-mother, Arnold and Kathaleen Waxman; brothers and their spouses: Gerald Waxman, Joel and Susan Waxman, Dael and Brenda Waxman, Matt and Janice Waxman; nieces and nephews: Zachary and wife Barbara Waxman, Elliott Waxman, Molly Waxman and Meara Waxman. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, July 21, at the Louis Memorial Chapel. Burial Mt. Carmel Cemetery.
