PAUL KANNENBERG Obituary

Paul J. Kannenberg (81) joined his Lord and Savior on February 16, 2010. Paul was a kind and loving man who loved his family, his church and his country. He was an entrepreneur most of his life, owning several different businesses. However, officiating youth sports was his passion, and for 57 years, he participated in the Johnson County Youth program, ending his service just four weeks prior to his death. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mike and his brother John. Paul is survived by his wife Janie Birkholz, ex-wife and friend, Virginia Arnold, and sister Martha Wollenburg. Children and stepchildren are Gary and Kathy Kannenberg, Teresa Timmons, Paula Lurf, Kenny and Cathy Birkholz, Susie Birkholz, Sally and Erik Rulifson and his darling granddaughters Chrissy Birkholz and Grace Kannenberg. Sixteen years of fighting cancer was simply enough for Paul. He will be sorely missed by all the lives he touched. A celebration of Paul's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, February 24, 2010, in the Wesley Chapel at Church of the Resurrection located at 137th and Roe, with visitation prior to the service. As always, Paul's request was contributions to Harvesters - The Community Food Network.

To the Kannenberg family. We are members of the Church of the Resurrection Emergency Medical Response team. Paul was one of our original and most dedicated members. We were blessed to know Paul as a brother in Christ. We witnessed his courage as he battled his illness with strength and conviction. We were awe-inspired to see him overcome his disease for a number of years, miraculously returning to the choir of all places to sing praises to his Lord.
Paul received our first and only "Member Emeritus" Award, a friendly gift to signify that regardless of his health, he was always a part of us.
And he always will be.
May God's Holy Spirit pour out His grace and mercy upon you...Ritch Richardson

To the Kannenberg family: I am sadend to hear of Pauls passing. Twenty years ago I started officiating volleyball and Paul was one that I first started with, he always greated with a smile and handshake and was happy to work with anyone. I continued to see Paul in many years of officiating to as most recent as last summer in softball, again always with a smile and handshake. What a example he was to all officials and children. I will miss his smile! Daphne Flaharty

Teresa and Gary, I'm so sorry for your lose and pain. I wish I could take it away. I'll miss your dad. My greatest memories were when I was lucky enough to help him build the deck you could park a truck on. The time we all went to the track and he got to ride in a nascar at top speed. Christmas time was always special. Your all in my thoughts and prayers.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news of Paul's passing. I have so many fond memories of Paul walking into the choir room and giving me the thumbs up and a high 5!! When I was going through cancer treatment with 3 of my family members, Paul was sending me emails of encouragement inspite of his own struggles. The last time I spoke to him, he sounded tired. He said, 'I just can't seem to get rid of this pneumonia". Paul is such an inspiration to me and he will be deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences are sent to all of his family. May his song ring your hearts forever!!
