Phyllis Ellis Obituary

Phyllis Nannett Ellis "Shorty", 88, passed away October 3, 2006. Her husband, Walter Edgar Ellis "Buddy" preceded her in death in 1979. They leave two children, Ronny Ellis and wife Wanda of The Lake of the Ozarks and Phyllis Wall and husband John of Lenexa, KS. She also leaves a loving daughter-in-law Lynda Ellis of Springfield, MO; four wonderful grandchildren Andrea and Jim Webb of Springfield, MO, Ron and Lorri Ellis of Lee's Summit, MO, Pete and Sommer Wall of Denver, CO and Sarah Wall of Westwood, KS; and five greatgrandchildren. She spent the last years of her life traveling, working with ceramics, playing Bridge, gardening and caring for cats. She planted and tended the entire courtyard at The Grand Court, Kansas City, MO. She also helped catch, neuter and release all the wild cats in the area, and then fed each one their preferred diet daily. She was a delightful lady who will be missed dearly. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 1:30-2 p.m. Monday, October 9, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Rd., Kansas City, MO followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to a humane society of donor's choice. (Arrangements: Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home (816) 942-2004)

Phyllis was a really neat lady. I met her through her love of the cats - something we shared. I lived at Cloverset, across the street from Grand Court and spent many an hour visiting with Phyllis while we fed the crew. My favorite memory of her is the day we were trying to trap Sugar for neuter. I got a call saying I needed to get up the street because we had him and I should pick him up and take him to the vet. I jump in the car, drive up the top of the hill at the Wornall entrance, and there is Phyllis holding this semi-wild cat in her arms like a baby. Running a close second is the day she decided to adopt Baby - a kitten that cared about no human except Phyllis. As she became unable to go out to feed the cats she still found a way to stay in contact. Blackie would come into the courtyard, sit and wait for Phyllis to toss treats off her balcony. She always worried what would happen to the cats if all of us moved and I know she was glad I took so many with me when I moved to the country.

I am so sorry for your loss. She was a joy to be around, with a huge heart, creativity, and an amazing energy and love of life. I was lucky to have known her.
