PHYLLIS KEMPER

Phyllis Kemper, 86, of Leawood, died peacefully on October 18, 2015. Phyllis would like to be remembered as a Christian trying each day to follow God's will. She loved her Lord, family, and friends, and reveled in the knowledge that she would join God's Kingdom. Phyllis was a "stay at home" Mom until age 43 when she graduated from St. Luke's with a nursing degree. She worked as a RN for 17 years. After she retired, she used her nursing skills at her church to administer to people in need. She was active in many church activities. In 2003, Phyllis moved to Brookdale Leawood. She enjoyed playing bridge and rarely missed Brookdale's Bible Study group. Phyllis was a leader in the Brookdale community, known for her advocacy for residents and her welcoming arms. Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Jim Kemper; her brother, Ken Schmedeman; and her parents, Clarence and Frieda Schmedeman. She is survived by five children: Cindy Kemper (Steve); Kit Vaughan (Don); Betsy Logan (Steve); Terry Kemper (Gina); and Tim Kemper (Diana, deceased). Phyllis had 10 grandchildren: Ali Terry, Drew Vaughan, Chris Emerson, Lindsay Nash, Becca Bagley, Jim Logan, Keith Logan, Elise Kemper, Sgt. Tori Kemper, and Nicole Kemper; and 11 great-grand- children. She will live always in the hearts of her family and friends as a guiding force and a nurturer of all people. A celebration of Phyllis' life will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 9948 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, KS on October 31 at 11 a.m. There will also be a brief memorial service at Brookdale Leawood on October 30 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Phyllis' church or Hollis Renewal Center, Box 402, Bonner Springs, KS 66012.
