Warrensburg, Missouri - Robert "Bob" Welling, 92, of Warrensburg, Missouri passed away peacefully surrounded by his family, on March 27, 2022.
Bob was born on January 30, 1930 in Montrose, Missouri, the son of John and Sylvesta (Lesmeister) Welling.
On July 18, 1959, Bob and Rosalee Buhler were united in marriage.
After earning his Juris Doctorate from St. Louis University School of Law, he spent two years in the U.S. Army. Upon his return, he began a sixty-year career in private law. A member of the county, state, and national Bar associations, he was awarded the Senior Counselor title by the Missouri Bar and the President's Award.
He served as president of the Missouri State Board of Education and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of State Boards of Education. Robert presided as chair of the Regional Council for Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City and a member of the hospital's Governing Board and Planned Gift Council. In addition, was a gubernatorial appointee to the Missouri Military Preparedness and Enhancement Commission and charter member of the Whiteman Area Leadership Council Board of Directors.
In 2007, Bob and Rosalee received the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Central Missouri. In 2011 Welling was admitted to the Bar of the United States Supreme Court and in 2017, Bob was awarded the Jimmy Kirkpatrick Heritage Award for Outstanding Community Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a brother, and two sisters.
Bob is survived by his wife Rosalee Welling, his daughter Kathleen Marie Welling, his son John Charles Welling, his grandson Stephen John Welling (Cambria), his great-granddaughter Summer Jaymes Welling, as well as his niece Mary Ellis Barry (Michael) and her children John, Rachael, and Tyler.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 2, 2022 at Sweeney-Phillips & Holdren Funeral Home in Warrensburg, Missouri. The family will receive visitors from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service. A reception will follow from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Milestones Barn north of Warrensburg. A private interment will take place at Warrensburg Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
If desired, Bob requested donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or Children's Mercy Hospital.
