ROBERT WOODS Obituary

Robert S. Woods, age 66, of Anaheim Hills, CA, passed away on December 13, 2010, after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born and raised in Kansas City, MO. He graduated with honors from the Virginia Military Institute in 1966 and entered the United States Air Force. He was deployed to southeast Asia in 1967 where he spent more than two years in Special Operations throughout North and South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. During that period, he accumulated approximately 2000 combat hours while flying over seven hundred combat missions. As a result of his actions, he was awarded the USAF Presidential Unit Citation, the USMC Presidential Unit Citation, the Air Medal with seven oak leaf clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was honorably discharged in 1972 having achieved the rank of captain. Following his military service, Bob worked as a securities broker, rancher, corporate pilot, Flight Safety International instructor, and an FAA aviation safety inspector. He is survived by his three children: Walker Woods and his spouse, Jenny Chapin Woods of Kansas City, and Jennifer Woods and Christopher Woods of Anaheim Hills, CA. He also is survived by three grandchildren: Dylan Sackschewsky, Chapin Woods, and Barrett Woods; and long-time love of his life, Patricia Noyes; and his dog, Shelly. Finally, he leaves his brother, Dick Woods, and sisters Abigail Tempel and Ruth Mielke. A service will be held on January 8, 2011, at 4 p.m., at Atlantic Aviation at John Wayne airport. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the Schwab Charitable Fund c/o Nomada Endowment Fund, S.R. Lemmon, P.O. Dear Abbie, Ruth and Family, We were so sorry to hear of Bob's passing. I have such fond memories of being at your house and hoping your big brothers would stop and tell us all hello...and most of the time they did. I think all of your classmates had crushes on at least one or both brothers.

My heart goes out to you. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Our hearts are with all who knew and loved Bob. Although I too only know him through Jenny, his courageous spirit and undying love shine through. May we all pass that forward, keeping his legacy alive.

I did not have the privilege of meeting Bob in person, but I know Jenni and have learned so much about him through her and the beautiful service that was held for him today. Given the incredible young woman who is his daughter, I am not surprised at how loved and admired he was by everyone. Jenni, that photo of you and your father at your White Coat Ceremony is so touching and speaks volumes about how proud you have made him. Your family was blessed and I am so sorry for your loss.

I never met Bob personally, but in the brief time that I have known Jenny and seen her unfailing devotion to him, I know that he was an extraordinary person. Jenny, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. I know that you will always carry your Dad in your heart and that he will be with you and will be so proud of you as he watches your successes as you continue in your new career.

Although I did not know Bob, I believe I met him through his daughter, Jenny. The love for her father, the deep pain expressed at his passing, and loving and tender way she speaks about her him, reveals volumes about the qualities of this man. The way he insisted, even in the face of a grave illness, that Jenny continue to succeed and pursue her dreams, demonstrates that even nearing death he thought of others. He must have been a rare and beautiful individual, I wish I could have met him. I am very sorry for your loss, but hold his memory in your hearts, and make him proud, through your actions and deeds. He could ask for nothing more and will be smiling from above. My deepest deepest condolences.

Bob will be sorely missed by all his dear friends north of 49. The fantastic new summer place he built exactly on the 50th parallel will no doubt be enjoyed by his family for many generations to come, and his memory will come easy for all the kindness he bestowed on his many friends on Cache Lake and at Farlane in general.
