He was a member and past-President of the Saline County Health Department Board, a charter member and past-President of the Slater Optimist Club, a member and past-President of the Slater Chamber of Commerce, and the 401 Couples Club. He had served on the Slater City Council since April of 1991, and as Mayor of Slater since September of 2005. He was a graduate of the Cleveland Chiropractic College in Kansas City, and worked for two years in the Kansas City area before establishing his chiropractic practice in Slater in 1981. He loved serving the community of Slater, enjoying its festivals and celebrations, especially the July 4 fireworks. Steve was a huge fan of fireworks, so since he has been Mayor, Slater has been known to have the biggest displays in the county.
