John Wredling Obituary

John H. Wredling

Born: March 16, 1914; in Aurora, IL

Died: Oct. 3, 2015; in St. Charles, IL

John H. Wredling, 101, of St. Charles, IL, passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2015, at his home. He was born on March 16, 1914, in Aurora, IL, the son of Hugo J. and Alma (Johnson) Wredling.

John graduated from Aurora West High School and then Aurora College. A job opportunity arose in West Virginia to an Executive in the Boy Scouts of America, forming troops and councils, so he moved. While in West Virginia John met and wed Gladys Mae Walker. Shortly after he enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII and in November 1942, went to England to serve in The Army Air Corp, 812 Bomb Squadron, 482 Bomb Group: The Pathfinders. He was given an honorable discharge in October 1945, and returned to West Virginia and his wife Gladys.

In 1946 John and Gladys left West Virginia and moved to Aurora, IL, where he started his career in education, from teacher to administration, and then to superintendent of schools in St. Charles, IL, from 1958 to 1972. He retired to take care of his wife Gladys, who passed in 1976. He would not retire and became an intermittent superintendent for Riley, Hawthorne, and Union School Districts for the education of children was in his blood.

All through this time he was involved in other public organizations, including Rotary International and Scouting. He was instrumental in forming the Two Rivers Boy Scout Council and served as the first President. John was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, scoutings highest award. He received the Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary International, the 1997 Charlemagne Award from St. Charles, and numerous other awards too long to list. He was truly proud to have a school named after him, Wredling Middle School. He was so proud that he attended every opening and closing day, and the school celebrated his birthday with him.

He was an active member of Rotary International, VFW Post 5036, American Legion Post 342, Aurora Retired Teachers, and many more.

John will be missed by all so many, and so much of what he did was focused on the children. A humble man, a good friend, and a man who lived an honorable life.

He is survived by John Thomas and Debbie Wredling, Peter Casey Wredling, Deane Westland and Kristi Sue Wredling, Kelly and Aiden Wredling, Jason and Kacy (Wredling) Ramsey & son, Alexander, and Scott Wredling.

John was preceded in death by his wife, Gladys Mae (Walker) Wredling; son, Scott Wredling; parents, Hugo J. and Alma (Johnson) Wredling; brothers, Donald Wredling and Carl Wredling; sister, Margaret (Wredling) Jurgelonis.

Well, I too as one of the Hubbell family need to express my admiration for Mr. Wredling. I graduated from STC in 1976.....along with Mr. Wredling's daughter Kris! And my father, Dick Hubbell, knew Mr. Wredling well and always spoke highly of his character and ability. He truly made STC a superior place to learn and live.

And one more story. In 1968, I was in 5th grade at Richmond elementary. I got in a fight at recess with Jimmy Horton (my neighbor) and we decided to finish it after school across the street off school grounds - front lawn of the Baptist church! Well, I would like to tell you that I was whipping Jimmy's butt........but that was not the case! A large number of grade school kids circled around our "fighting ring" for the big show! Well, about half way through the whipping, Mr. Wredling drove by on his way home and saw what was happening. He pulled his car over, got out, and pulled Jimmmy Horton and Brian Hubbell apart - gave us a slight spank and told us "to get home"....and we did! Jimmy and I are best of friends to this day.....and Mr. Wredling knew exactly how to handle the situation.

God bless him. I'm sure he's in Heaven today visiting with my father.

Mr. Wredling taught me a valueable lesson when I was a 3rd grader. I'll never forget it and it's always served me well. I was no trouble maker, but he made me understand the value of what to do if trouble was to head my way and how to handle it. He truly was an insipiration to all of us. My god, he was 62 years old when he gave me the advice!!! Tom Hubbell, son of Dick Hubbell

My father, Dick Hubbell, spoke so highly of Mr. Wredling. Those of us that attended St. Charles schools were blessed to have his leadership. We received a first class education because of the dedication of the teachers and the administration led by John Wredling. What an inspiration to all. Kay Hubbell
