Scott Bergeson Obituary

Scott R. Bergeson

St. Charles native, Scott R. Bergeson, 69, died of natural causes on October 28, 2020, at his home in Jay, Vermont.

With engagements at some of the nation's most prestigious opera companies, symphonies and universities, Maestro Bergeson cultivated a wealth of experience as conductor, coach and accompanist. Following studies in conducting and piano at Oberlin Conservatory, the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and at the Juilliard School, where he was recipient of an American Opera Center Fellowship, Bergeson joined the music staff of the New York City Opera as Assistant Conductor in 1977 under Beverly Sills, and in 1980 became the recipient of the Julius Rudel Award. He made his conducting debut with the company in 1981, leading a performance of Nicolai's Merry Wives of Windsor. During the next thirteen seasons, he conducted more than 300 performances with the company, including the world premiere of Dominick Argento's Casanova's Homecoming and three "Live from Lincoln Center" TV broadcasts (The Cunning Little Vixen, Candide, Le Nozze di Figaro). From 1980-2005 Bergeson conducted 22 productions with Cleveland Opera.

With the San Francisco Opera, from 1997-2001, he was on staff of their Merola Opera Program for emerging young artists, where he led multiple productions.

In 1992, he was invited to join the staff of the Metropolitan Opera as Assistant Conductor, assuming the musical preparation for a wide range of repertory. In 1998 he made his conducting debut at the Met and subsequently took the podium for performances of Die Zauberflöte, Salome, La Traviata, Idomeneo, The Rake's Progress and Le Nozze di Figaro, conducting such notable international stars as Placido Domingo, Anne Sophie von Otter, Hei Kyung Hong, Karita Mattila and Bryn Terfel. His vast experience spans the globe, having led performances with companies throughout the US, including Cleveland Opera, Opera Theater of St. Louis, Santa Fe Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Connecticut Opera, Fort Worth Opera, Kentucky Opera, Utah Opera, San Diego Opera, Cincinnati Opera, Philadelphia Opera, Minnesota Opera, Tri-Cities Opera, Aspen Music Festival and Orlando Opera, as well as in Europe, including Brussels' Theatre la Monnaie, Oslo's Den Norske Opera, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestrain Norway, Philharmonic Orchestra of Bucharest in Romania and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

I ran across this picture of Scott today. He is so very missed. What a loss to the opera world. But to me I have lost a teacher, a mentor, a cheerleader and a friend. I remember the first time I got to sing for him. It was during an orchestra rehearsal for Elixir of Love at Oberlin. (He was our guest conductor for the run.) He bellowed out the door of the hall that he needed a member of the woman´s ensemble immediately and I happened to be passing by. I got to sing the part of the chorus by myself for the whole rehearsal. From that moment on we were fast friends. Such a loss. He returned my senior year to conduct Mozart/Salieri double bill. (Attached picture) Dear Scott I thank you being my friend all these years - you will be desperately missed.

Scott was a major influence in my life in many ways. I am very lucky to have known him since my childhood. He has always been part of my close family. Truly funny, brilliant, caring and loving all in his own magnificent ways. I have and will always love him very dearly. He was my mentor, always encouraging me to do better, as well as a great friend and listener in some of the most transformative moments in my life. He inspired me to do and be many things. Everything he did was with greatness and I will sorely miss him.

I was a member of Cleveland Opera for 14 years. Maestro Scott sent his own meticulously marked parts for the orchestra to practice; this conveying his wishes and saving rehearsal time for other things. We really appreciated this. He was wonderful to work for. His understanding of the score was deep and he had a great way of weaving the ‘story’ of the opera with the music.

I was lucky enough to see Scott conduct Le Nozze di Figaro on Tv. What a wonderful performance.

I am so sorry for your family loss, and for the loss of the music world.

Sincerely,

Kathy Shanklin

I was so shocked and saddened to hear that Maestro Bergeson had passed away. I worked with him on multiple occasions and have the fondest memories of his humor, professionalism, musical knowledge, and kindness. My heart goes out to his family and I hope comfort can be found in knowing what a huge impact he had on so many lives.
