Thomas Atchison Obituary

DARIEN – On Aug. 22, 2013, Thomas F. Atchison passed away peacefully at his home that he shared with his wife, Faith.

Tom was born in Chicago in 1945. He served in the United States Army, worked as a paramedic, firefighter and ran his own cement finishing business. He served as an officer and detective for the majority of his career, which included the Kane County Sherriff's Department, the Sugar Grove Police Department and the Hampshire Police Department, where he served as the chief of police until he retired in 2009.

He was a loving brother to his sisters, Margie McCullough, Ruthie Caulkins and Katie Frank; and to his brothers, Al and Robert Atchison.

Tomís children, Linda (Joe Pitrone), Patty (Jeff Kramp) and Thomas invite all family and friends to attend a simple memorial service on Thursday, Aug. 29 at Ralph Seyller Memorial Park in Hampshire. The service will take place on at 7 p.m. to allow for the release of Chinese lanterns in his honor.

Friends are invited to bring along a lantern or balloon adorned with their own sentiments to release as part of the ceremony.

I was lucky to have had the opportunity to work some investigations with Tom. He was one of the many officers of departments other than mine that I could depend on and with whom it was a pleasure to work. I learned some things about police work and about life from Tom. I am certain that my partners would echo my opinion of Tom. He was a good police officer, a good person and a true, American patriot. He endured Vietnam. I will miss him.

I knew Tom from the Sheriff's Department. Our professional paths crossed many times after we both left KCSO. He was dedicated to public service..."a Cop's Cop." I am saddened by his passing and he will be missed by all who knew him.
