Cheryl McWaters Obituary

Kearney resident, 71

KEARNEY - Cheryl L. McWaters, 71 of Kearney died Monday, June 20, 2011, at Mount Carmel Keens Memorial.
Services will be at 11 a.m. July 9 at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Eric Lesher officiating. The family is honoring her wish that people wear casual attire at her service. Inurnment will be at First Lutheran Church Columbarium.

O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Edgar to Alwin "Bud" and Enid "Betty" (Overturf) Scism.

Survivors include her father of Kearney; brothers, Tony Scism and his wife, Connie, of Aurora and Garth Scism and his wife, Vicki, of Kearney; sister, Mary Kulhanek of Kearney; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews and one great-great-niece.

She grew up in Edgar and Deweese and received her undergraduate degree from West Texas State University in Canyon, Texas, and her master's degree from Kearney State College.

She taught school for 33 years, including several years in Nelson and Minden.

Cheryl was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Nebraska State Education Association and various civic organizations. She was very active in her church until her health decline made it impossible to participate.

Cheryl loved children and volunteered at Northeast Elementary School in Kearney.

She was preceded in death by her mother; brother, Mike Scism; and sister, Karen Anderson.

Memorials are suggested to AseraCare Hospice. Online condolences may be submitted at www.osafh.com.

To the family of Cheryl McWaters my thoughts and prayers are with all of you. Cheryl always had kind words and brought a smile to me each time I visited with her at Northeast Elementary. What a remarkable person she was and we will all miss her.
