Hubert Hecox

September 15, 1927 - September 17, 2025

Hubert H. Hecox, age 98 of Kearney, died on Wednesday, September 17, 2025 at the Kearney Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, September 23, 2025 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Kearney. Pastor Matt Fowler will officiate. Burial with military honors will be at Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, September 22, 2025 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney. Hubert was born on the family farm near Newark, Neb. to Harold and Eva (Christensen) Hecox. He attended Newark School through the 8th grade and then attended Kearney High School. He graduated with the class of 1945. Hubert was involved with FFA and 4H while in high school. He was crowned the first ever 4H King at the Kearney County Fair in 1947. Hubert proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War.

He married Lyla David on May 22, 1976 in Kearney. Hubert farmed near the Newark and Ft. Kearny area his entire life and was named Farmer of the Year in 1991. He was an avid volunteer at Ft. Kearny and was instrumental in several projects at the park including the initial planting of Indian Corn and Beans and also the construction of the Ft. Kearny Pedestrian Bridge. He also planted many of the wild flowers that still grow along the hike/bike path.

He was an extensive traveler and had visited nearly all 50 states with Lyla over the years. He also enjoyed hiking and hunting in the mountains of Colorado and Alaska. He especially enjoyed hunting Moose and Elk.

Hubert was an active member of First United Methodist Church in Kearney and also the Kearney American Legion Post #52.

Surviving relatives include his son and daughter in law, Carroll and Lorene David of Kearney; grandchildren, Ryan David of Omaha, Michael (Abigail) David of Englewood, Colo., Chandra (Jason) Hawley of Aurora, Neb. and Brant (Deidre) Hollister of Kearney; seven great grandchildren; other extended family and friends.

Hubert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lyla; son, Kyle
