I don't know Jim, but reading his story just gives me inspiration! Thank you Jesus for being in his life! And thank you for sharing his story!

Jim was my instructor at McNeal in the Super Cub and some in the C-185 between January and June 1996, and Edna taught us bookkeeping in preparation for our Tribal Air/Communications ministry in the Philippines. On one of my early sessions with Jim in the C-185, I think my second or third flight, Jim covered up the airspeed indicator with one of those rubber disks with the suction cup on the back as we were making a landing pattern, and I thought that wasn't good because I was so new to the airplane. Jim told me to set the power normally, lower the flaps incrementally at the usual points in the pattern, and listen to the sound of the airflow through the wing airducts on final approach to judge airspeed. I learned a lot about flying the 185 on that flight, and have been able to apply that knowledge to other Cessnas as I train pilots for mission aviation service. Jim was a great pilot, but also a gentle-but-firm, godly, servant leader. I was privileged to spend time with him.

Gracious. Kind. Generous. Stable. Jim has had a great influence on my life and family over many decades. He was leading missionary training when my parents began their missionary careers. He landed aircraft in our front yard, which was the runway back then. In later years he provided guidance and leadership of our missionary aviation team as we flew aircraft in faraway places. Watching him as he navigated deep waters of joy and sorrow while building teams, equipment, facilities, and people, I have learned a lot from Jim and am grateful that God brought him into my life. We are praying for the family as you all grieve. We are anticipating the day when we will see him with our Savior.

Our time at TA/C was in 1984. Among the many folks we became acquainted with their were Jim and Edna. It was my privilege to have Jim train me for my commercial pilot certificate in Comanche N93F. One of Janet’s favorite memories is when Edna helped solve her issue with migraine headaches. Thank you Jim and Edna for the beautiful testimony of your lives. Janet and I continue to be involved with the flight program as alumni.
Jim, you will be greatly missed. One of my prize possessions is the signed copy of your biography.
Love,
John and Janet Johnson

When I went to Arizona to take the missions pilot course Brother Jim was one on my instructors, I appreciate his sense of humor, his high quality of pilot, his patient with me, but more than nothing his daily walk with the Lord, such a great example for me.

Edna and family, we are sorry for your loss of Jim. While we know that his faith is now sight and we rejoice for his gain, we extend our deepest sympathy to you, knowing that you will miss him very much. We count it a privilege to have gotten to live and work beside you at TA/C. We have wonderful memories of fellowships at your home, times spent with you, times you watched our girls, and many more memories than we can share here. Our love to you all, Phil and Jean Thomson

We really enjoyed getting to know Jim and Edna when they lived in McNeal, AZ and were with New Tribes Mission. We attended church with them and enjoyed their fellowship. Jim taught Sunday School and they also were a big part in entertaining nursing home residents at Thanksgiving. We want to send our heartfelt condolences to Edna and the extended family. We will be celebrating his home-going with you.

Wow, I just heard the news of Jim's passing! From my perspective it is sad to think of it. From Jim's perspective it is great news as he is with the One he served for so many years! I grew up with Jim working alongside my father for many years in Jersey Shore, PA. They were good friends and partners in the Gospel! I was there when Jim started the training program for New Tribes Mission. I watched it all and got to fly with him. My senior yr of High School, Jim flew my father and me all the way to the Bahama Islands for meetings my father had there - we had a great time in the old Piper 150 I believe it was. Jim was always an encouragement to me as a teen. He coached me along in my quarterbacking skills and I competed against him any times in backyard football. His boys - Brad and Danny were my boyhood friends and we have many good memories of our childhood! They were great days and we couldn't have had better fathers and times together. Years later, when were were serving in Venezuela we were home for a furlough and stopped in Arizona to see Jim and Edna at the Mission Flight School. I still remember Jim helping us with a broke down vehicle and then showing us all around the area as an "uncle" would do! It was a great time of reuniting after many years. I will miss Jim and the great times we had together but I know he has heard "well done" after so many years of service to the Lord in reaching unreached peoples around the globe thru his skills in flying! God used him greatly and we in Ethnos360 are thankful for him, his service, and his impact on our organization! We pray for Edna and the family as they adjust to their loss and know the Lord will calm their hearts in this difficult time.
